Brummett Leads Seminole Women’s Golf Team at Auburn Tiger Derby Invitational

AUBURN, Ala. –
Sophomore Whitney Brummett is in a tie for fourth place in the individual standings and has led the Florida State University women’s golf team to a ninth place team standing after the first round of the 10th Auburn Tiger Derby Invitational at the Auburn University Club. Brummett played her best round of the Seminoles’ four-tournament fall season as she tied her career-low score in leading Florida State to its second best team round of the season.

No. 7-ranked Auburn, the host team, holds a three-stroke lead over No. 1 ranked Duke and No. 4 ranked Georgia after the first 18 holes of the event. The Tigers were led by Maria Martinez who carded a three-under par 69. She leads Duke’s Liz Janangelo and Taylor Leon of Georgia by two strokes.

Brummett (Eureka, Mo.) played well throughout the first round as she recorded par or better on 13 of the 18 holes she played. She had birdies on six holes and played on five holes at over par. Brummett entered the event averaging 76.67 strokes per round this fall and shot nearly five strokes below her season average in the first round.

Brummett enters the second round looking to earn the third top-five finish of her two-year Seminole career. She earned a career-best tied for third finish at the spring 2005 Ryder/Florida Championship and tied for fourth place at the fall 2004 Lady Paladin Invitational.

Seminole junior Jaclyn Burch (Wildwood, Mo.) continued to play well as she carded a four-over par 76 in the first round. She has now played five of her 10 rounds this fall with scores fo76 or below. Burch entered the event with a 76.00 stroke average in three tournaments this fall and matched her average in the first round. She is in a tie for 34th place in the individual standings.

Also playing well for the Seminoles were sophomore Whitney Wright (Rockingham, N.C.) and senior Caroline Larsson (Danderyd, Sweden) as they carded scores of 77 and 78 respectively. Freshman Lauren Cousart (Athens, Ga.) is also playing for the Seminoles in the event.

The second of three rounds begins at 8:30 CST Saturday morning with a shotgun start.
