Oct. 23, 2004

GREENVILLE, S.C. –
Florida State freshman Whitney Brummett tied her career-low with a 72 and moved into a tie for 10th place in the individual standings and the Seminole women’s golf team jumped into eighth place in the team standings after the first two rounds of the 34th-annual Lady Paladin Invitational at the Furman University Golf Course. Brummett led the Seminole lineup which counted all four individual scores at 75 or better to finish with their best single-round score of the fall season (294). Florida State’s team score of 294 was the fifth best of the 23 teams competing in the event during the second round.

Furman’s 21st-ranked Lady Paladin golf team is tied with No. 2 Georgia entering the final round of the event. Furman carded a 292 in the second round while the Bulldogs fired 290 to send the teams into the final day sharing the lead at 579. For the second day, the Lady Paladins were paced by sophomore Monique Gesualdi from St. Augustine, Fla. Gesualdi recorded her first ever bogey free round and carded a 70 to hold the individual tournament lead at 139. TCU’s Catherine Matranga and Georgia’s Kelly Froelich are tied for second at 141, while Furman’s Jenny Suh, Mississippi’s Katie Davidson, and Georgia’s Whitney Wade are tied for fourth at 144.

Brummett (Eureka, Mo.) led the Seminoles with her second career round of 72 and is tied for 10th in the individual standings with a two-day total of 146. Her 146 total for the first 36 holes is a career best. Brummett begins play in the final round looking for her first career top-10 individual finish. She earned her career-best finish of tied for 20th at the Tar Heel Invitational earlier this month.

Sophomore Jaclyn Burch (Wildwood. Mo.) continued her strong play as she carded a one-over par 73 and begins play in the final round in a tie for 13th place with a 147 total. Since carding a career-low tying 72 in the fourth round of the 2004 NCAA Championship, Burch has played four of her last eight rounds with scores of 74 or better.

Freshman Whitney Wright (Rockingham, N.C.) played the best round of her short career as she carded a two-over par 74. Coupled with her first round score, Wright has a two-day total of 153. Wright’s career-best round was four strokes better than her previous best round of 78 which came during the third round of the Cougar Fall Classic in September. Junior Caroline Larsson (Danderyd, Sweden) played her best round of the fall season as she finished with a three over par 75. Junior Kristin Sordel improved her second round score by one stroke and looks to move up in the individual standings in Sunday’s third and final round.

The third and final round of the event is slated for Sunday at the 5,984-yard, par 72 Furman Golf Course. All teams will begin at 9:30 a.m., with Furman, Georgia, third-place TCU, and fourth-place Auburn going off holes one through three.
