Florida State University junior Whitney Brummett is tied for first in the individual standings and the Seminole women’s golf team is tied for fifth in the team standings after the first two rounds of the Cougar Women’s Golf Classic at Yeamans Hall Golf Club. Brummett carded a two-under par total of 140 and is tied with Lauren Hunt of North Carolina for the individual lead heading into Tuesday’s third and final round.
North Carolina and Louisiana State are tied for the team lead after the first two rounds of the event with identical scores of 579. The Tar Heels and Tigers lead the Seminoles by nine strokes. North Carolina and Florida State are the two highest ranking ACC teams in the event – Maryland is seventh, NC State is tied for eighth and Miami is 13th after the first two rounds of the three round event.
Brummett (Eureka, Mo.) tied her career low score in both rounds as she shot consecutive scores of 70. It marked the third time in her collegiate career that she had shot a 70 in a single round. She carded 32 of 36 holes at par or better and finished with only one hole at double-bogie. Brummett played the back nine in the first round at three-under with four birdies, four pars and only one hole over par. She begins Tuesday’s third and final round looking to earn her top career individual finish – her career best finish of tied for third place came at the spring 2005 Ryder/Florida Women’s Collegiate Championship.
Seminole All-America Caroline Westrup (Ahus, Sweden) is tied for 14th in the individual standings. She finished with a two-over total of 146 for the first two rounds. After carding a two-over par 74 in the first round she closed the day with an even-par 70. In seven collegiate events entering this one she has finished out of the top four only twice.
Florida State sophomore Lauren Cousart (Athens, Ga.) is tied for 38th with a two-round score of 151 while fellow sophomore Erica Gonzalez (Davie, Fla.) is tied for 42nd with a 152 total. Senior Jaclyn Burch (Wildwood, Mo.) is tied for 56th with a two-round total of 154.
