TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Florida State’s Dagny Brynjarsdottir and Kelsey Wys were honored for their performances last week as the Seminole duo led the Garnet & Gold to road victories over No. 9 North Carolina and NC State.
Brynjarsdottir garnered her first ACC Player of the Week award as she scored two goals, both game-winners, in leading FSU to wins over the Tar Heels and the Wolfpack to keep the Seminoles undefeated in the ACC and overall extending their school record win streak to 11 in a row.
The Icelandic native scored the lone goal of the match in the 61st minute as Florida State defeated North Carolina 1-0 for its scored straight victory in Chapel Hill and second win in a row over the Tar Heels. On Sunday against NC State, Brynjarsdottir once again came through with the clutch goal as she broke a scoreless tie with the game’s first goal in the 15th minute of a 2-0 victory over the Wolfpack.
Brynjarsdottir finished the week with six shots including three shots on goal and two finding the back of the net. Missing the first two ACC games after playing overseas with the full Icelandic National Team, the sophomore midfielder returned in fine fashion by scoring two of the three goals scored in Florida State’s victories over UNC and NC State.
Wys once again was a stalwart in goal for the Seminoles as she registered a season-high seven saves in pacing Florida State to a 1-0 shutout victory over North Carolina in Chapel Hill. It marked her second straight shutout over the Tar Heels on their home turf as she played every minute of the Seminoles’ 1-0 double overtime victory in the ACC Tournament Quarterfinals.
Her biggest save of the evening came with less than seven minutes in regulation as the Coral Springs, Fla., native went air born to snare a shot to the far post by Crystal Dunn. The Tar Heel defender tried to hook a shot around Wys, but the Seminole keeper made an outstanding leap, grabbing the ball out of the air while maintain possession as she crashed to the ground for the save. The play was so huge that it appeared at No. 5 on ESPN’s SportsCenter Top 10 plays of the night.
Wys played over 80 minutes between the posts against NC State and did not have to make a save en route to earning her 10th win of the season.
The weekly honor for Brynjarsdottir by the ACC is the first of her career and the fourth time a Seminole has been honored by the league office in 2012. Brynjarsdottir sits with 11 points on the season with four goals and three assists as three of her four goals have gone for game-winners to set a new season-high.
With no goals in over 170 minutes of action this past weekend, Wys lowered her goals against average to 0.31 – the second best average in the nation. The junior keeper is 10-0-0 on the year with six shutouts and a .917 save percentage.
Brynjarsdottir, Wys and the Seminoles return to action on Thursday, October 4 as Florida State hosts Clemson at 7:00 p.m. The match marks FSU’s annual Paint It Pink contest as the players will wear pink jerseys which will be auctioned off on line beginning Friday, October 5.
