TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Play continued on the third day of competition at the Bedford Cup on the campus of the University of Florida in Gainesville. The Seminoles have doubles partners Andres Bucaro and Benjamin Lock play in tomorrow’s final match.
The semifinal doubles match today was Garnet vs. Gold as Bucaro and Lock faced off against their own teammates Cristian Gonzalez Mendez and João Gauer. Playing against very familiar opponents, the two teams went back and forth but Gold, Bucaro and Lock, walked off the court with the 8-5 win. They play Florida’s Alford and Diep tomorrow.
“One of our goals was to have an individual or a team in the finals,” head coach Dwayne Hultquist said. “Benjamin and Andres have done that and will have a tough match in the finals against the Florida team who won Southern Intercollegiate last week. We know it will be a tough match. I like how they have played their return games and have picked up their serves. I’m pleased with the progress they’ve made so far.”
Sophomore Dominic Cotrone’s impressive singles run ended in the semifinals as he lost in a tight three set match. USF’s Federico Sabogal won 4-6, 6-4, 6-2.
“Dominic had a great tournament here,” continued Hultquist. “He had a top 20 win which is the highest ranked win of his career. To do it on the other team’s home court and in straight sets was a really good showing on his part. He was a little bit tired today; he played a real good first set but didn’t have enough to quite finish it off.”
Playing a consolation match was freshman Michael Rinaldi who topped Florida Gulf Coast’s Tianyu Bao 7-6, 6-4.
