Sept. 11, 2005

Junior Jaclyn Burch and sophomore Whitney Wright, who are tied for 35th in the individual standings, are the leading Seminole players after the first two rounds of the third annual Cougar Fall Classic at the Yeamans Hall Golf Club. The Seminoles are in 14th place in the teams standings after 36 holes of the 54-hole tournament.

The tournament was moved up one day because of the threat of inclement weather from the effects of Hurricane Ophelia. The hurricane remained stationary off the coast of the Carolinas with a hurricane watch in effect for the states of North and South Carolina. The event is scheduled to be completed with the final 18 holes to be played on Monday.

Tennessee carded a two round total of 581 and grabbed a two stroke lead over second place Georgia after 36 holes of play in the event. Tennessee’s Nicole Smith leads the event with a 2-under par, 142 after shooting a pair of 71’s on the day. Smith owns a one stroke lead over three others including College of Charleston senior Angie Hill who shot a 71 and a 72 on the day (143).

Burch (Wildwood, Mo.) played her best golf of the day as she shot an even par 72 in the second round. She played four holes at one stroke under par and 11 holes at even par. Burch improved her score by eight strokes in the second round after carding an 80 in the first round.

Wright (Rockingham, N.C.) played well throughout the day as she shot a one-over par 73 over the course of the first 18 holes and a 79 over the second 18 holes. She came within one stroke of tying her career best single-round score of 72 which she shot at the fall 2004 Furman Paladin Invitational.

Caroline Larsson (Danderyd, Sweden) and Whitney Brummett (Eureka, Mo.) are also competing for the Seminoles. Larson shot a 75 in the second round while Brummett shot two scores of 78 during the first two rounds. The fifth player in the Seminoles quintet is freshman Lauren Cousart (Athens, Ga.) She improved her second round score by four strokes as she totaled an 81 over the second 18 holes during the afternoon.
