TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Sophomore defensive end Brian Burns was named the Atlantic Coast Conference Defensive Lineman of the Week after recording five tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss, 1.5 sacks, two quarterback hurries and a forced fumble in FSU’s 38-22 win at Florida Saturday.
Burns, from Fort Lauderdale, sacked Gator quarterback Feleipe Franks on Florida’s second drive, forcing a fumble that was recovered by Jacob Pugh and returned 16 yards for the opening score. It was Burns’ third forced fumble on the season after tallying two against Clemson earlier this month.
Burns was part of a defensive effort that forced four turnovers, including Pugh’s scoop-and-score and Levonta Taylor’s pick-six. FSU scored 28 points off turnovers against the Gators on Saturday.
For the season, Burns has 44 tackles, 11.5 tackles for loss, 4.5 sacks, three pass breakups (two Saturday against Florida), three forced fumbles and one fumble recovery. Burns also has two of FSU’s FBS-best six kicks this season.
Burns is the sixth different Seminole, and third defensive end, to earn ACC Player of the Week honors in 2017. Defensive ends Josh Sweat (vs. Alabama) and Joshua Kaindoh (vs. Delaware State) were named Defensive Lineman of the Week, while defensive back Derwin James (Alabama), kicker Ricky Aguayo (Specialist, Wake Forest) and running back Cam Akers (Offensive back and Rookie, Syracuse) have also been recognized.
Florida State wraps its regular season Saturday at 12:00 p.m. against ULM. The game will stream nationally through the ACC Network Extra.
