Burroughs Records Complete-Game Shutout Over FGCU

FT. MYERS, Fla. – Continuing her impressive start to the season in the circle, redshirt senior Jessica Burroughs recorded 12 strikeouts in a complete-game shutout as No. 1 Florida State (23-1-1) earned a 7-0 win over Florida Gulf Coast (13-10) in front of a sellout crowd at the FGCU Softball Complex on Tuesday night.

Burroughs struck out the side in the first inning for the sixth time in her 12 starts this season and didn’t allow a hit until the fourth inning. She improved to 12-1 on the season, giving up just three hits and a walk in the game.

“Quality outing today from the entire team,” said FSU head coach Lonni Alameda. “Even though we didn’t get on the board until the fourth, everyone kept battling and staying in it, having good at bats and knowing that if you keep trusting the process, you’ll continue to create good opportunities. Burroughs was confident and attacking in the circle and the defense made plays behind her. Now we’ll have a couple of chances to get after it again tomorrow with the doubleheader.”

The Noles had runners on in each of the first three innings on singles by Dani Morgan, Sydney Broderick and Morgan Klaevemann, respectively, but all would be left stranded.

Florida State broke through in the fourth inning as Alex Powers legged out an infield single and came in to score on an RBI triple by Jessica Warren. Ellie Cooper pushed the FSU lead to 2-0 with a sacrifice fly to right field.

After a walk to Broderick, Carsyn Gordon drove her third triple of the season to right field to extend the Seminole advantage to 3-0.

The Noles brought in four runs in the seventh, all with two outs, to complete the final 7-0 score. Cassidy Davis drew a walk and was pinch-run for by Korina Rosario. Consecutive base hits from Morgan and Powers loaded the bases with one away in the inning.

Warren extended the lead to 4-0 with her fourth sacrifice fly of the season to score Rosario for her team-leading 26th RBI of the season. Cooper drove a double in the gap in right center to empty the bases and Broderick followed with her second hit of the day to make it 7-0 Seminoles.

The Eagles managed just two hits in the first six innings, both by leadoff hitter Kelsey Huff. FGCU managed a walk and a single in the seventh inning to put runners on the corners with nobody out. Burroughs retired the next three batters to close out the game.

The Noles wrap up their trip to Ft. Myers tomorrow with a pair of games at the FGCU Softball Complex. Florida State will play Canisius (9-9) at 2:00 p.m., before taking on Florida Gulf Coast again at 4:30 p.m.
