TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Cal State Northridge’s Christen Bedwell hit a game-winning home run in the top of the sixth inning to lift the Matadors to a 2-1 victory over Florida in Game Three of the 2004 NCAA Division I Softball Tallahassee Regional Thursday at the Seminole Softball Complex. With the win, Northridge improved to 34-17 and advanced to Game Eight Friday at 3 p.m. The Gators fell to 40-19 on the year and will play Friday at 10 a.m in an elimination game.
The Matadors struck first with a run off of two hits in the fourth inning, but left the bases loaded. With one out and one on, Northridge’s Jade Abel doubled to center field to score pinch runner Darcy Hillstrom. Bedwell singled and Emilee Moores walked to load the bases, but Gator pitcher Stacey Stevens recorded the fourth of her eight strikeouts and Northridge designated player Sondra Milchiker flied out to end the inning.
Florida evened the score in the bottom of the fifth. With just one hit through the first four innings, the Gators had two hits, including a home run by right fielder Mandy Schuerman. Northridge regained the lead on Bedwell’s blast the next inning and Florida managed a leadoff single in the seventh off of Matador pitcher Kia Fennell, but could not capitalize.
With the victory, Fennell, who struck out four and walked three in the complete game, improved to 18-9. Stevens, who struck out eight and walked five, went to 14-10 on the year.
