NEW LONDON, N.C. (Seminoles.com) – It was an even-keeled opening round for No. 7 Florida State Men’s Golf on Friday at the ACC Championship at Old North State Club. As a team, FSU shot 1-under (287) to sit in a tie for third place. Freshman Corey Carlson made his conference tournament debut in impressive fashion, showing little nerves with a 1-under 71 that ties for the 13th-best among all individuals.
The Green Cove Springs, Fla., native finished with a 35 on the back nine, punctuated by a birdie on the Par-4 13th hole that is 389 yards. Carlson only recorded one hole above par and added two birdies.
Senior Hank Lebioda matched Carlson for the team’s low score with a 71 on the Par-72 hole course. The Ben Hogan Watch List member had a lively three-hole finish with bogeys on the 16th and 17th. However, the senior leader finished strong with a birdie on the par-5, 568-yard 18th hole to end his round with satisfaction.
Junior Josh Lee was solid with an even-par 72, knocking home three birdies in his round. Senior Rowin Caron (+1) and redshirt junior Cristobal Del Solar (+1) each recorded 73’s. Currently, all five Seminoles are within the Top 25, including Carlson, Lebioda (T-13th), Lee (T-18th), Del Solar (T-24th) and Caron (T-24th).
Clemson (-15) and Wake Forest (-11) hold a commanding grip on the first and second spots. Tying with FSU at 1-under is Virginia, Duke, Georgia Tech and Louisville.
The Seminoles will once again tee off on Saturday beginning at 11:30 a.m., with Del Solar starting off. Caron (11:40 a.m.), Lee (11:50 a.m.), Carlson (noon) and Lebioda (12:10 p.m.) will follow.
Florida State recorded 64 pars to match Clemson and Georgia Tech for the most in the field, and executed once again with a 2.95 average score on par 3’s that ranks second. Carlson’s 15 pars recorded is tied for the second most among all individuals.
Part of Saturday’s round will air on ESPN3 beginning at 3 p.m. with Mac McDonald (PXP) and Brandon Turner (Color) on the call. Sunday’s ESPN3 final-round coverage starts at 1 p.m.
