TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Opening her collegiate softball career with an impressive freshman campaign, Carsyn Gordon has been selected as a top 25 finalist for the 2016 Schutt Sports / NFCA Division I National Freshman of the Year Award, as announced by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association on Thursday. The Seminoles have had a freshman student-athlete among the top 25 finalists in all three years of the award as Gordon joins Jessica Burroughs (2014) and Jessica Warren (2015).
“What a great honor for Carsyn, but it just reflects how important our entire freshman class has been for us this season,” said FSU head coach Lonni Alameda. “Carsyn has done a great job for us in a variety of positions on the field and has worked hard to improve at the plate, coming through with some big hits for us so far. Along with the other freshmen in the lineup and coming off the bench, the youth of our team this year is a big asset that has been a major part of our success.”
Gordon is batting .365 (31-for-85) this season with nine doubles, a triple, three home runs, 30 RBI and 25 runs scored. She also has a slugging percentage of .600, an on-base percentage of .477 as well as seven stolen bases.
In five games against ranked teams, Gordon has a .312 batting average, including multi-hit games on the road in victories at No. 13 UCLA and No. 22 Notre Dame. She drove in a run in each of her first two at bats on the road at No. 3 Auburn as the Noles defeated the Tigers, 4-3, on April 20.
Gordon hit the first home run of her career on February 24, a grand slam against Florida A&M. Each of her other two home runs have also been grand slams – versus UAB on February 28 and against Cal State Northridge on March 6. The three grand slams places her in a tie for No. 11 on the NCAA single-season list and already ranks in a tie for No. 25 on the NCAA career grand slam list.
The list of finalists will be reduced to 10 on May 12, while the top three finalists will be selected on May 25. The Schutt Sports / NFCA Division I National Freshman of the Year will be announced on May 31.
