TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – After leading the Seminoles to a perfect weekend on the pitch to extend FSU’s home unbeaten streak to 32 games, redshirt junior Cassie Miller and redshirt senior Kirsten Crowley earned conference and national accolades on Tuesday. Miller was named the ACC Defensive Player of the Week and earned an honorable mention nod for the TopDrawerSoccer Team of the Week, while Crowley was named one of the top XI on the TDS Team of the Week.
It is Miller’s second ACC Defensive Player of the Week honor of the season and third of her career. Crowley makes her third career appearance on the TDS national list and first of the 2016 season.
Miller posted two clean sheets as the Seminole goalkeeper, shutting out No. 4 Duke (1-0 OT) and Louisville (1-0). Against the high-powered Duke offense that led the ACC in scoring in conference games entering the weekend, Miller and the FSU defense kept the Blue Devils from scoring for just the third time this season.
The Cave Creek, Ariz., native made a save on Christina Gibbons’ PK attempt in the 85th minute and also made a leaping save in the 90th minute, blocking the ball up into the crossbar and saving the follow-up shot as well to force overtime and allow the Noles to score the golden goal in the 98th minute.
Sunday’s victory over Louisville marked Miller’s 10th solo shutout of the season and she is in the top ten in the nation in goals against average (0.31 – third), shutouts (fifth) and save percentage (0.894 – eighth).
Crowley captained the FSU defense this weekend, limiting Duke’s quality offensive chances and, along with fellow centerback Natalia Kuikka, cleared numerous entry crosses from the Blue Devils.
Against the Cardinals on Sunday afternoon, Louisville was held without a shot for the final 55:33 of the match as Florida State recorded its fourth consecutive shutout in the series between the two teams.
The Seminoles will close out the regular season on Thursday, October 27 on the road at North Carolina. The match will begin at 7:00 p.m. at Fetzer Field and will be broadcast on ACC Network Extra. Live stats will also be available on Seminoles.com. Tickets for Thursday’s match are available on goheels.com.
