March 31, 2012

ATHENS, Ga. (seminoles.com) –
Freshman Laure Castelain shot a 1 over par 73 and moved into a tie for 22nd place in the individual standings and the Seminole women’s golf team is in a tie for 13th place in the team standings with one round remaining to be played in the Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic at the University of Georgia Golf Course. Castelain carded her second consecutive round of 73 and has a two day total of 146 to lead the Seminoles.

No. 2 ranked Alabama stretched their lead in the team standings to seven strokes as the Crimson Tide looks to win its second consecutive Liz Murphey tournament title. Alabama leads Georgia by seven strokes and South Carolina by 12 strokes in the race for the team championship. Jennifer Kirby of Alabama shot an even part score of 72 and continued to hold the lead in the individual standings. She tied the event record with a six under par score of 66 in the first round.

Castelain (Bordeaux, France) was the most consistent of the five Seminoles playing the tournament as she carded a 73 for the second consecutive day. She carded 14 holes at par or better with three birdies. Castelain was never more than two strokes over par during the round and was 1 under par over her last three holes to finish her round at 73.

Castelain was even par on her back nine including one under par on her last eight holes to finish as the Seminoles’ leader in the round. She has carded a team leading seven birdies – including six on the back nine – during the first two rounds of the tournament.

Junior Jessica Negron (Ocala, Fla.) finished with a 76 in the second round and stayed in the top 50 of the individual standings at a tie for 45th place. Negron and teammate Maria Salinas (Lima, Peru) are tied for 45th place with identical scores of 151.

“We carded way too may bogeys today,” said head coach Amy Bond. “We were just never able to get anything going. We need to do the little things better. Tomorrow we need to settle in from the start at make birdies and pars which will equate to better scores.”

Sunday’s round – with a shotgun start – will see the Seminoles playing with Oklahoma and Denver.
