TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (seminoles.com) – Junior Laure Castelain, the top academic achiever on the Florida State women’s golf team, has been named to the All-American Scholar Team presented by the Women’s Golf Coaches Association. Castelain has earned a 3.561 cumulative grade point average in finance through the first three years of her career. She enjoyed the best academic year of her career this past year as a junior as she achieved a 3.9 GPA during the fall of 2013 and a 3.7 during the spring of 2014 – the competitive golf season.
Castelain’s honor of being named to the 2014 WGCA All-American Scholar Team continues quite an academic role for the Florida State team captain. She was named to the 2012 ACC Academic Honor Roll and was named to the 2012, 2013 and 2014 All-ACC Academic Women’s Golf Team. She was one of only three freshmen named to the 2012 All-ACC Academic Women’s Golf team and is one of only 11 golfers in the ACC to be named to the All-Academic Women’s Golf team in each of the last three seasons.
Castelain has also enjoyed a standout career on the course for the Seminoles. She has played in 29 of the last 31 events for the Seminoles dating back to the second event of her career – the Susie Maxwell Berning Classic. She was at her best as a junior (fall and spring seasons) as she finished the year with a career-low 75.19 stroke average while playing in nine of the Seminoles’ 11 events during the year. Castelain has helped Florida State to three NCAA regional championship appearances (Central in 2012, West in 2013, East at Tallahassee in 2014) and helped the Seminoles into a pair of fourth place team finishes in the ACC Championship (2012 and 2013). She has been Florida State’s top finisher in four events during the first three seasons of her career.
During the spring of 2104, she played as a member of her third consecutive NCAA Championships qualifying team and finished as Florida State’s third leading scorer with a career-low 74.93 stroke average. She played in five of seven events with four of the five appearances coming as a member of the Seminoles’ starting line-up. Castelain earned her third career top-10 individual placing as she finished in a tie for 10th place in the Seminole hosted Florida State Match-Up. Her best tournament score of the spring season (218) and second best score of her career vs. par (+2) came at the Web.com/Marsh Landing Intercollegiate – the seventh time during her career that she has finished at five strokes over par or better. Castelain earned three top-20 finishes with her tied for 10th outing in the Florida State Match-Up, her tied for 15th placing in the Web.com/Marsh Landing Intercollegiate and a tied for 17th place finish in the season opening Florida Challenge.
Castelain was one of nine players from the ACC to be named to the WGCA Scholar Athlete team. She is the first Seminoles to be named to the WGCA All-American Scholar team since Caroline Westrup earned the honor in 2009.
The WGCA All-American Scholar Golf Teams recognize the outstanding academic and athletic achievements in women’s college golf. Recognized as having one of the highest standards for selection to these teams in college athletics (3.50 GPA), the WGCA All-American Scholar Golf Team continues to demonstrate the high level academic achievements of its players.
A total of seven Seminoles have been named to the WGCA All-American Scholar Athlete team a total of 16 times since 2003. Whitney Brummett is the only Seminole to be a named to the team four times while Caroline Westrup and Caroline Larsson were named to the team three times each.
