With two rounds remaining in the 54-hole tournament, Florida State will look to finish as one of the top eight teams in the final standings in order to advance to the NCAA Championship finals at the University of Tulsa May 20-24. The Seminoles, who entered the event ranked 30th nationally are only one stroke out of eighth place and only three strokes out of seventh place.
12th-ranked Vanderbilt blistered the course with a women’s collegiate course record team score of 277. The Commodores’ score was seven strokes better than the 284 posted by Oklahoma on February 16, 2013 and by Clemson on February 16, 2014. Vanderbilt has a three stroke lead over Tulane. Tulane was led by Emily Penttila who shot a career-best and a women’s course record 65 in the first round. Celine Boutier of Duke is in second place in the individual standings as she shot a 5-under par 67.
“For an opening round I’m actually really happy with the way we finished,” said head coach Amy Bond. “We got off to a little bit of a rough start – I think their nerves kind of kicked in. After that rough start the girls really settled in, had a good stretch of holes in the back nine (which was the front side of the course) and I’m really happy with the way we finished. We are looking forward to what the next two days will hold. I think by the end of the day we will be right where we need to be.”
The Seminoles were a combined 6 under par on their back nine with All-ACC selections Castren (minus two) and Alex Milan (minus three) leading the way.
Castren (Espoo, Finland) led the Seminoles with her team-leading eighth score of the year in the 60’s. She carded 16 holes at par or better with five birdies and was never above par during the round. She was as many as 4 strokes under par after consecutive birdies on her 13th and 14th holes of the day. Castren played in her final 10 holes of the round at 2 under par.
Castren, who is playing in her first career NCAA regional championship, is looking to tie the Seminoles’ school record for individual wins in a year with three and looking set the school record for most top 10 individual finishes with nine. She earned her first individual championship at the Florida State Match-Up on this course in February of 2014 and averages 69.50 strokes in four career competitive rounds at SouthWood. Castren is a total of 13 strokes under par in two tournaments played on this course.
“I think we did good,” said Castren. “We didn’t play our best but we are right where we need to be right now and we are excited for tomorrow. Our coach told us that we really came back in the back nine and it’s really important since there are a couple of tricky holes on the back nine.
Milan finished with a 1-under par score of 71 and is in a tie for19th place in the individual standings. Milan totaled a team-high tying five birdies and was three under par on her back nine with four birdies.
Milan is playing in her second career NCAA regional championship tournament and finished the first round with a career NCAA championships best score of 71. She earned a personal best NCAA score by nine strokes and came within three strokes of tying her career best single round score of 68.
Freshman Anna Sophia Böhmer (Cali, Columbia) and Lydia Gumm (Radcliff, Ky.) carded identical scores of 75 and are both tied for 70th in the individual standings. Böhmer scored 12 holes at par or better with three birdies while Gumm totaled 134 holes at par or better with two birdies. Florida State will once again play with Tulane and Kentucky in the second round and will tee off from hole No. 1 at 12:05. The tournament wraps up Saturday and will see the top eight teams qualify for the national championship round.
