TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (seminoles.com) – Florida State Freshman Matilda Castren finished in a tie for 18th place in the individual standings, and the Seminole women’s golf team finished in a tie for 11th place in the team standings as the NCAA Division I East Regional women’s golf championships at SouthWood Golf Club came to a close on Saturday. Despite finishing with an under par score for the fourth time in seven events this spring, Castren nor the Seminoles advanced to the NCAA Division I Championship finals.
12th-ranked Vanderbilt set a women’s collegiate course record with a 24-under par score of 840 to win the team championship and advance to the NCAA Championship Finals at the Tulsa (Okla.,) Country Club May 20-24. The Commodores will be joined by South Carolina, NC State, Duke, Stanford, Virginia, Tulane and Campbell as the eight team representatives in the final round. Vanderbilt shot a tournament low and women’s collegiate course record 274 in the final round to pull away from the field. It finished 14 strokes ahead of the second-place Gamecocks after leading by six strokes entering the final round. Jenny Hahn shot 6-under par 66 to lead Vanderbilt take the top three individual spots in the individual standings. Hahn finished first with a 9-under par total of 207, while teammate Kendall Martindale shot a 6-under par 210 to place second. A third Commodore — Irina Gabasa – finished in a tie for third place with a 5 under par total of 211.
The individuals advancing to the championship finals are Hayley Davis of Baylor and Gabriella Wahl of East Tennessee State. Wahl defeated Grace Na of Pepperdine in a four-hole sudden victory play-off as she eagled her final hole to gain the win. The advancing individuals are the two highest finishing players not on one of the eight advancing teams.
Castren (Espoo, Finland) finished with a 74 in the third round and led the Seminoles with a 1 under par total of 215 for the tournament. It marked the sixth consecutive event and ninth time in 10 events this year that she had finished as the Seminoles’ leader.
Castren played solid golf with 13 holes scored a par with three birdies in earning her score of 2 over par 74. She finished in 19th place to mark the 10th time in 10 events that she finished in the top 20 of the individual standings in an event. Castren was even after her first 14 holes of the day but closed the round at 2 over par over her final four holes. She carded as many bogeys in the final round (five) as she did in her first two rounds of the event combined.
Freshman Lydia Gumm (Radcliff, Ky.) led the Seminoles in the final round with a 1 over par score of 73. She played the best golf of the season in the final two rounds of the regional championship as she finished with scores 72 in the second round and 73 in the third round for a total of 145. Gumm carded 15 holes at par or better with three birdies and was never more than one stroke over par during the round.
Gumm played exceptional golf during her final two rounds of the regional with 29 of 36 holes scored at par or better with seven birdies.
Junior Carlton Kuhlo finished the tournament well with her second consecutive round scored a 74. In the final round she was 1 under par with 11 holes played at par or better through 12 holes but finished the round at 3 over par. Kuhlo totaled eight birdies in the 54 hole event including three each in the second and third rounds.
Florida State will begin its fall 2014 season in September at the Mo Morial Classic at Texas A&M University.
