GAINESVILLE, Fla. (seminoles.com) –
Seminole freshman Matilda Castren is in a tie for 11th place in the individual standings and the Florida State women’s golf team is in sixth place in the team standings with one round remaining to be played in the Lady Gator Invitational at the Mark Bostick Golf Course at the University of Florida. Castren will begin play in the third round of the tournament looking to earn her second consecutive individual championship after earning medalist honors at the Florida State Match-Up last month. She is only five strokes off of the individual lead with 18 holes to play.
Kent State is the team leader after two rounds of play and holds a seven stroke lead over Ohio State. The Seminoles, in sixth place in the team standings, are currently five strokes ahead of No. 4 ranked Oklahoma (eighth place), 10 strokes ahead of No. 16 ranked Florida (10th place) and four strokes ahead of ACC foe Miami (seventh place). Marijosse Navarro of Texas A&M is in first place in the individual standings with an even par total of 140 after two rounds. She is one stroke ahead of a group of four golfers including Elizabeth Brightwell of Virginia.
Castren (Espoo, Finland) is Florida State’s leader with a two round total of 145. She carded a 72 in the first round and a 73 in Saturday’s second round. She carded 15 holes at par and only three holes over par during the round. Castren carded nine consecutive holes at par to begin the round and totaled five straight holes at par in the middle of her back nine.
Castren won the individual championship at the Florida State Match-Up in February and has earned six consecutive top-15 individual finishes. She has finished in the top 15 of each of the first six events of her career including a first place finish at the Florida State Match-Up and a second place finish at the Florida Challenge to begin the spring season.
Junior Laure Castelain (Bordeaux, France) carded a 73 in the second round and moved into a tie for 28th place with a two-round score of 147. She has carded six consecutive single round scores of 75 or better with each of her seven scores this spring being scored at 76 or better. Castelain carded 14 holes at par or better with one birdie in finishing one stroke better in the second round (73) as compared to her first round score (74).
Junior Alex Milan (Lutz, Fla.) continued to play well as she carded a 74 in the second round and is in a tie for 28th place in the individual standings with a two round total of 147. Milan totaled one birdie in the second round and has three birdies in the first two rounds of the tournament.
Junior Carlton Kuhlo (Tallahassee, Fla.) carded a career-best 68 in the second round and is in a tie for 11th place in the individual standings. Kuhlo carded 15holes at par or better with five birdies. She was never over par during the round as she scored a par on her first hole and birdied her second hole. Kuhlo was as many as three strokes under par and was never over par during her second round.
Kuhlo’s second round career-best score of 68 allowed her ti tie her career best score for 36 holes (145) which she also carded in the Alamo Invitational during the Fall of 2013.
