Relay for Life, the American Cancer Society’s signature event was held on April 16th & 17th at Mike Long Track on Florida State’s campus. Relay for Life is a fun filled overnight experience designed to bring together those who have been touched by cancer and to represent that cancer never sleeps.
Each year the Student-Athlete Advisory Council (SAAC), makes a point to have at least one person from each sports team take turns walking from start to finish in this 18-hour event. With continued support of the American Cancer Society, Florida State student-athletes registered two teams this year, Team Garnet and Team Gold.
Team Garnet included Football, Men’s & Women’s Swimming and Diving, Volleyball, Softball, Men’s & Women’s Golf, Baseball, Cheer and Golden Girls. Team Gold included Soccer, Men’s & Women’s Tennis, Men’s & Women’s Track and Field, Men’s and Women’s Basketball, and Men’s & Women’s Cross Country. Together, both teams raised over $2,500 dollars.
In addition to taking their turn walking around the track, a select few members from football and women’s basketball took the time to pose for pictures and sign autographs with Relay participants.
The 2010 fundraising goal for FSU was a lofty $145,000. With 136 teams and nearly 2,000 relay participants, amazingly the goal was reached by the end of closing ceremony on Saturday morning. Additionally, FSU’s Relay for Life 2010 became the first relay in the state of Florida to ever raise over $100,000 online.
Helping to assist in attaining this year’s goal were team captains Melanie Cabassol (Women’s Diving) and Bryan Howard (Men’s Track & Field). During Relay, many people from within the community gathered to celebrate cancer survivors, remember those lost to cancer, and fight back against the disease.
Relayers helped raise money and awareness to support the American Cancer Society in its lifesaving mission to eliminate cancer as a major health issue.
