CHARLOTTESVILLE – Florida State sophomore Sam Chang picked up his second ranked singles win in as many matches but it wasn’t enough Sunday, as the No. 8-ranked Virginia men’s tennis team defeated No. 23 Florida State 5-2 at the Snyder Tennis Center.
The Seminoles closed out the road portion of their league schedule and dropped to 13-10 overall and 6-3 in the ACC; the Cavaliers improve to 18-6 on the season, 8-1 in the conference.
FSU senior Chris Westerhof had a perfect day, recording victories at No. 5 singles and No. 1 doubles. He and partner Ytai Abougzir, ranked No. 20 in the country, defeated No. 27 Rylan Rizza and Nick Meythaler, 8-5. However, the Cavaliers won the doubles portion of the match with victories at Nos. 2 and 3. The team of Treat Huey and Somdev Devvarman scored an 8-3 win over Maciek Sykut and Andrew Bailey at No. 2 doubles. Darrin Cohen and Doug Stewart then clinched the opening point for Virginia with their 8-6 at No. 3 doubles over Jonathas Sucupira and Sam Chang.
In singles, the Cavaliers extended their lead to 2-0 as Cohen cruised to a 6-0, 6-2 victory over Chris Cloer at No. 6 singles. That lead became 3-0 as Rizza downed Sucupira in straight sets at No. 2 singles. Florida State rallied to cut the score to 3-2 with wins at No. 3 and No. 5 singles by Chang and Westerhof. Chang upset No. 53 Huey, 7-5, 6-4, and Westerhof dominated Meythaler 6-0, 7-6.
No. 9 Devvarman then clinched the win for Virginia with his three set win over Ytai Abougzir at the No. 1 positioni three sets 7-6, 5-7, 6-1. Marko Miklo closed out the match with a three set win over Sykut at No. 4 singles (7-5, 5-7, 6-1).
Florida State closes out the regular season against NC State and Wake Forest on Friday (April 14) and Sunday (April 16). Sunday is also Senior Day and Chris Westerhof will be recognized.
