TULSA, Okla. – Sophomore Clint Bowles took the first step towards making the main draw winning his first qualifying match at the D’Novo/ITA All-American Championships in Tulsa, Okla., on Monday, October 06, 2008.
The 48th-ranked Bowles defeated Fresno State’s Tejesvi Veerepalli in straight sets 6-1, 6-3 in a match that was moved indoors because of rain.
“I think it was a little bit of an adjustment,” FSU head coach Dwayne Hultquist said. “I thought Clint hit the ball well and his timing was good and he played really well.”
Senior Maciek Sykut also had his match moved indoors and he was defeated by Florida’s Tyler Hochwalt 6-3, 6-3.
“I thought both of our guys played well,” Hultquist said. “I know Maciek was disappointed, but he did a lot of good things.”
Bowles entered qualifying as the No. 2 seed and if he wins two more matches he will advance to the main draw for the second consecutive year. The Tampa, Fla., native will play the winner of the match between Texas’ Miguel Reyes-Varela and Clemson’s Rok Bizjak on Tuesday.
“Clint has been through this before and it is never easy,” Hultquist said. “There are a lot of good players in college and you have to win some tight matches.”
Junior and 13th-ranked Jean-Yves Aubone automatically qualified for the main draw based upon his pre-season ranking. He and Bowles have also qualified for the main draw in doubles as the No. 12-ranked team in the nation. The All-American main draw begins on Thursday.
