TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Florida State junior wide receiver Laveranues Coles released the following statement Friday through the schools sports information office regarding his arrest earlier this month.
“I want to take this opportunity to apologize to my University, our football team, and my family for embarrassing them earlier this month. I regret this situation which involves a former family member and I hope it is resolved in the near future.
“Coach Bowden has suspended me for the Texas A&M game and I’m sorry that I won’t be able to help my teammates. It’s a very tough price to pay to miss a game as important as that one on national television, but it makes me more anxious to put this behind me both on an off the field very soon.”
Coach Bowden confirmed Coles’ suspension saying, “it will be a one-game suspension. I hate it for him because I know him to be a fine young man who genuinely regrets this situation.”
Coles’ suspension leaves either sophomore Marvin Minnis or junior Germaine Stringer, who have just 21 career receptions between them, in the first team spot when the Seminoles open preseason drills on Monday.
