Conference Leading Six Seminole Golfers Named To All-ACC Academic Teams

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The Florida State men’s and women’s golf team placed a league high tying six student-athletes on the men’s and women’s All-ACC Academic teams as selected by the league office. The Seminole women placed a league-high tying four players on the women’s team while the Florida State men had two players named to the men’s squad. The Seminoles finished tied with Duke (two men and four women) for the highest number of total golfers named to both teams.

The Seminoles finished tied for the ACC lead with four women – senior Whitney Brummett, juniors Lauren Cousart and Caroline Westrup and freshman Macarena Silva – named to the All-ACC Academic women’s team. It marked Brummett’s (Eureka, Mo./political science) fourth consecutive and Westrup’s (Ahus, Sweden/sport management) second consecutive selection while Cousart (Athens, Ga./professional golf management) and Silva (Santiago, Chile/business) earned their first selections to the academic team.

The Florida State women finished the 2007-08 season ranked 26th nationally in the final GolfWeek / Sagarin Performance Index and 31st in the final head to head rankings by GolfStat. The Seminoles’ ranking of 26th in the GolfWeek poll is their highest of the season. Junior All-America Caroline Westrup was ranked 12th nationally in the GolfStat Cup standings and 15th among all Division I women’s golfers in the GolfWeek rankings. The Seminoles finished in third place at the ACC Championship.

The ACC Champion men’s squad was represented by senior Jonas Blixt and freshman Drew Kittleson. The Seminoles were one of six men’s teams in the league to have multiple players named to the All-ACC Academic team. It marked the second selection for Blixt (Hammaro, Sweden/multinational business) and the first for Kittleson (Scottsdale, Ariz./business) to the academic team.

The Florida State men finished the 2007-08 regular season ranked No. 7 in the Golf World / Nike Coaches’ poll. The ranking for the ACC Champion Seminoles was their highest of the spring season and placed them as the highest ranked team in the ACC and the highest ranked team in the state of Florida. Florida State began the 2007-08 season ranked No. 15 and matched its highest ranking of the year at in the final poll of the season. The Seminoles were also ranked No. 7 during the week of October 17, 2007 after a season-opening victory at the Inverness Intercollegiate and three top-10 team finishes. The Seminoles won their first ever ACC Championship and played in the NCAA regional championships for the third consecutive season.

The Seminole women open the 2008 fall season at the Cougar Classic (Sept. 14-16) while the men open their fall season at the Fighting Illini Invitational (Sept. 19-21).
