TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Two members of the Florida State swimming and diving team were selected as the ACC Performers of the week on Tuesday. Senior Jason Coombs won the Male Swimmer of the Week while freshman Ayla Bonniwell took home the Female Diver of the week following their performances at the Georgia Fall Invite that ran from Dec. 2-4.
Coombs is named the ACC Men’s Swimmer of the Week after helping his team place fifth overall and ahead of No. 10 Michigan. The senior finished the 100 breast with a time of 52.71 which ranks him ninth nationally.
“I am very happy for Jason,” FSU head coach Neal Studd said. “He took some time off and to see him back swimming so fast already is a thrill.”
The Oviedo, Fla. native came back in the 200 stronger than ever, touching with a time of 1:55.27which ranks 12th in the nation. In addition to his individual swims, Coombs split a 23.76 in the 50 breast leg in the 200 medley relay, which was the second-fastest in the field. The overall time of 1:25.63 is the 11th best time in the nation this year.
Bonniwell takes home her first career ACC recognition after leading the team in all three events this past weekend. The rookie was under the zone score in both the 1-meter (272.85) and three-meter (280.50) on the weekend. The Ithaca, N.Y. native also placed fifth (221.70) in the platform.
“You know big things come in small packages,” FSU head diving coach John Proctor said. “Ayla has really improved, she works hard, she’s been great to coach and hopefully she can keep doing great things as her freshman season rolls on. I’m happy for her.”
Coombs and Bonniwell were recognized along with Kaitlyn Jones and Bryce Shelton, from Virginia.
