AUBURN, Ala. –
Florida State senior Lauren Cousart is in a tie for 20th place in the individual standings after shooting a three-over par 75 and the Seminole women’s golf team is in a tie for ninth place in the team standings after the first round of the Auburn Tiger Derby Invitational at the Auburn University Club. The Seminoles, ranked 34th in the latest national rankings by GolfStat, finished the first round of the three-round tournament ahead of No. 13 ranked Louisiana State.
In addition to Cousart’s score of 75, the Seminoles also counted scores of 76 by freshman Hannah Thomson, 78 by sophomore Macarena Silva and 81 by freshman Whitney Wenglasz. The Seminoles are in the top 10 of the team standings despite not counting the score of three-time All-American Caroline Westrup who shot a very uncharacteristic score of 82. It marked the first time in Westrup’s 32-tournament career that her score had not counted toward the team total.
No. 8 ranked Virginia holds the team lead after the first round. The Cavaliers hold a five stroke lead over No. 7 ranked Alabama and a nine stroke lead over No. 8 ranked Auburn – the host team for the tournament. Virginia’s Whitney Neuhauser holds the first round individual lead after shooting a three-under par 69 over the first 18 holes.
Cousart (Athens, Ga.) played strong golf in the first round as she carded 15 holes of par or better golf with one birdie. She birdied her second hole of the day and was at or below par during her first seven holes of the round. Cousart put together runs of five consecutive pars on her first nine and seven consecutive pars during her second nine.
Thomson (Perth, Australia) counted her score of 76 toward the team total. She carded 13 holes at par or better with two birdies.
Silva, who most recently played in the 2008 Women’s World Amateur Team Championship, shot a six-over par 78. She was two-over par with one birdie over her first nine holes but fell to four-over par with two bogeys and one double bogey on her back nine. Silva (Santiago, Chile) was at or below par over her first six holes of the round.
Wenglasz (Oldsmar, Fla.) finished with a seven-over par score of 81 while Westrup finished with an 82.
The second of three 18-hole rounds is scheduled for Saturday with the final round set for Sunday. The Seminoles earned their best Derby finish in 1998 when they finished in second place behind Georgia.
