TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – For the first time this season, and the fourth time in her career, redshirt senior defender Kirsten Crowley has been named ACC Defensive Player of the Week, as announced by the league on Tuesday. Crowley led the Seminoles to a pair of shutouts over the weekend, a 3-0 defeat of No. 17/8 UConn and a 1-0 overtime victory against Troy. The FSU defense held the nationally-ranked Huskies without a shot from the 12th minute to the 71st minute and UConn managed just one shot on goal in the entire game.
The Panama City, Fla., native made two impressive defensive plays near the end of the match as UConn continued to fight, making a slide tackle in the 70th minute to stop a breakaway attempt and diving to intercept a pass on a 2 vs. 1 counterattack in the 75th minute.
Against the Trojans, the Noles allowed just two shots and one on goal for the match. Crowley also factored into the overtime winner as she made a run to the far post and headed Megan Connolly’s cross back to the middle of the box for Kristen McFarland to easily chest the ball into the net in the 91st minute. It was Crowley’s second assist of the season and eighth of her career.
For the season, FSU has allowed just one goal in six matches and opponents have only placed 11 shots on goal in 540:52 of match time in 2016.
Crowley and the Seminoles return to action on Thursday, September 15 with a match against Mercer at the Seminole Soccer Complex at 7:00 p.m. The game will be broadcast live on ACC Network Extra and live stats will be available on Seminoles.com. Admission is free for all home regular season FSU Soccer matches.
