Florida State senior gaurd Monte Cummings was named the Seminole’s first ACC Player of the Week for the 2001-2002 season after averaging almost 19 points in FSU’s wins over South Florida and undefeated and top-ranked Duke.
Cummings averaged 18 points, 8.5 rebounds and two steals as Florida State won two games last
week including a victory over previously undefeated and No. 1 ranked Duke. Cummings scored 16 points
including the game-winner against Duke to give the Seminoles their first ever victory over the nation’s No.
1 team. Cummings scored the game-winning basket against the Blue Devils on a lay-up with seven
seconds remaining to give the Seminoles the 77-76 victory. Cummings scored 16 second half points on
seven-of-nine shooting from the field to lead Florida State to the victory. Cummings drove around both
Jason Williams and Carlos Boozer to sink the game winning shot. Cummings scored his 16 second half
points as the Seminoles maintained as much as a 13-point second half lead. Twice he scored baskets to
increase a Seminoles’ lead from one point to three points within the final four minutes of the game. The
lay-up was the final basket of the game that helped the Seminoles recover from a four-point deficit in the
final 56 seconds of the game.
He scored a team-high 20 points and grabbed 10 rebounds as Florida State
defeated South Florida, 78-74, Jan. 2. He shot seven-of-14 from the field, made one 3-point shot and five
free throws. He scored 14 second half points as the Seminoles outscored the Bulls, 45-39, to gain the
victory. He made three free throws in the final 58 seconds to seal the victory. The 20 point/10 rebound
performance gave Cummings the first double-double of his career.
The Seminoles return to action this evening when they face the NC State Wolfpack in a game scheduled for a 9:00 p.m. tip-off and will be shown live on the Sunshine Network. The Seminoles are currently 1-1 in ACC play.
