Tallahassee, Fla. – Florida State senior Rafeeq Curry (Miami, Fla./ACE Academy) earned Atlantic Coast Conference Indoor Performer of the Week honors for the week of January 16-22, 2005, for his record-setting performance at the Modrall Sperling Lobo Invitational.
The two-time NCAA East Region Champion easily won the event on Saturday by more than a meter, with a mark of 54’5.5″ (16.60m). He set the Albuquerque Convention Center track record and earned a berth to his seventh consecutive NCAA National Championships. Curry set the FSU school mark last season at the Tyson Invitational with a distance of 54’0.5″. Rated the top jumper in the nation by the Dandy Dozen and one of the top three returning indoor jumpers according to placing at nationals last season, Curry entered the meet with the second-farthest jump in the conference and sixth nationally with his provisional distance from the Florida Intercollegiate meet.
Curry also provisionally qualified and almost won the long jump competition, placing second with a career-best distance of 24’9.75″ (7.56m). He is the only Seminole to hold qualifying marks in two events.
