The trip began on Tuesday with the team taking a bus to the Atlanta airport. The team flew from Atlanta to New York City’s JFK International airport and arrived at around 6 p.m. ET. FSU departed for their eight-hour flight to Dakar, Senegal a little after 10 p.m. ET.

Dakar is in the Greenwich Mean Time Zone, which four hours ahead of Eastern Standard Time, so FSU arrived in Senegal at a little after 10 a.m.

It rained most of the the first day in Dakar, but the Seminoles still got a great look of what the city is really like. Dakar, which has a population over two million, borders the the North Atlantic Ocean. The rain didn’t deter many natives of Senegal from working out on the beach or from selling goods in the streets, as the team drove through the city on a bus.

The highlight of the first day definitely was a trip to a local orphanage. The orphanage has around 80 children and the experience had an impact on the entire team. None of the employees and volunteers there spoke English, but luckily Leo Rodriguez and our great tour guide, Maktar, were able to translate. The trip was very powerful, and many of the players did not want to leave the wonderful infants they had just met.

Overall it was a great first day. While some of the buildings and infrastructure in Dakar are still developing, FSU’s hotel, the Terrou-Bl, is very modern and similar to any American hotel.

On Thursday, the team will either give a clinic or go on a safari in the morning before facing Senegal’s National Team in an exhibition game in the afternoon.
