Day One Results From Malibu

Oct. 2, 2010

MALIBU, Calif. – Florida State women’s tennis team began play today at the Riviera/ITA Women’s All-American Championships in Malibu, California. The Seminoles came out strong as No. 59 Noemie Scharle, No. 64 Katie Rybakova teamed up in doubles to defeat Emily Newton and Caroline Thornton of Auburn University 8-2.

“I’m proud of Noemie and Katie today, they seem to be looking more and more comfortable with each other as each match passes,” said associate head coach Oliver Foreman. “This result should give them a good boost of confidence for the next round. They say the toughest match is always the first match, so now they are through this I think they can relax a little more and open up.”

While Scharle and Rybakova were victorious in their first match, another Seminole tandem composed of senior Federica Suess and freshman Manon Veldman fell 8-2 in their match against Auburn’s Olivia Bennett and Jacqueline Kasler.

“It was a tough loss for Fede and Manon today,” added Foreman. “I know they are walking of the court expecting a lot more, but I am proud of their attitude and energy on court. They never gave up and battled until the final ball was hit.”

Foreman believes the loss can be a learning experience for the newly formed team, and that better days are soon ahead, “For them its just a matter of playing more together. At times one would play great and the other would slip and vice versa. If they can compliment each other a little better by both playing well at the same time they will have a chance at getting some good results.”

Scharle and Rybakova will team up again tomorrow to take on Southern Cal’s doubles team of Danielle Lao and Lyndsay Kinstler. For doubles teams to advance they must win all three rounds of pre-qualifiers to move on to the qualifying doubles draw. Scharle and Rybakova will also participate in qualifying singles amongst a draw of 64 players. In order for a player to advance to the main draw of qualifying singles they must win three matches.
