TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (Seminoles.com) – Redshirt senior Cristobal Del Solar shot a 2-under 68 on Saturday to help push No. 18 Florida State Men’s Golf into fifth place through the second round of the OFCC/Fighting Illini Invitational at Olympia Fields. Del Solar’s 68 on Saturday is his career low at Olympia Fields Country Club, with it being his eighth round played as a Seminole. The Chile native’s previous low score at the championship course was a 74 in 2013. “Cris is one of the best competitors I have coached,” FSU head coach Trey Jones said. “He finds a way and never gives up on a hole. Our young guys are learning a lot from him.”
Overall, the Seminoles shot eight strokes better with a 6-over 286. Del Solar is now tied for 18th at 4-over, using three birdies to his advantage with just one bogey in the second round. Illinois remains in first place at 6-under, followed by Texas A&M (+15), Oklahoma State (+17), UNC (+19) and FSU.
Senior Josh Lee is FSU’s overall leader at 3-under, shooting a 71 on Saturday. He birdied the par-5, 576-yard 15th hole to help his steady round. Through two rounds he is shooting 1-under on par 5 holes at Olympia Fields.
Lee (29) and Del Solar (27) are first and second, respectively, in pars among all individuals.
“Our seniors carried us today. Their experience in this tournament and environments like this is so important,” Jones added.”
Redshirt junior Harry Ellis is tied for 36th at 8-over after finishing with a 74. His lone birdie came on the 17th hole, par-4, 455-yarder. Included in his round was a 36 on the back nine.
Redshirt freshman Jonathan Keppler rebounded with a 3-over 73 in the second round and is 12-over total. Sophomore Corey Carlson is currently 11-over.
The final round of the OFCC/Fighting Illini Invitational begins on Sunday morning with tee times yet to be announced.
