TALLAHASSEE, FL.– The 32nd-ranked Florida State women’s tennis team hosted No. 22 Wake Forest today in their last regular season home match at the Scott Speicher Tennis Center. Despite taking the doubles point, the Seminoles came up short against the Demon Deacons on Senior Day, falling 3-4.
FSU’s Samantha Schoeffel and Jessica Balbuena have been impressive in doubles play so far this year and are ranked No. 38 by the ITA in doubles. The pair took another big win this evening, defeating Bea Bielik and Jackie Houston at No. 1 by a score of 8-4. The Seminole tandem of Alida Gallovits and Nanette Duxin lost 8-3 at the No. 2 doubles position, however, Wake Forest forfeited the No. 3 doubles match, putting FSU up 1-0.
Wake Forest also forfeited the match at No. 6 singles, bringing FSU’s lead to 2-0. The Demon Deacons came back strong, getting straight set victories at the No. 1 and No. 2 singles position, as well as No. 4, thereby taking a 3-2 lead.
Senior Nanette Duxin, playing in her last home match for FSU, won the first set against Elisabeth Proctor at No. 5, 7-6, and then stepped it up a notch to take the second set, 6-0, tying the score at 3-3.
In the decisive singles match between Florida State’s Christina Denny and Wake Forest’s Jackie Houston at the No. 3 position, Houston came out on top, winning 6-2, 6-4.
The loss puts Florida State at 9-6 for the season and 1-1 in ACC play, while Wake Forest improves to 8-6 overall and 3-0 in ACC action.
Next up for the women are two ACC matches on the road, as the Seminoles are scheduled to play No. 6 North Carolina on Saturday, March 31st at 1:00 p.m., and No. 2 Duke on Sunday, April 1st at 11:00 a.m.
