Deyna Castellanos Named All-American

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Following a record-setting season offensively, sophomore forward Deyna Castellanos received national recognition as she was named a Second Team All-American by United Soccer Coaches in 2017.

Castellanos earned the national accolade for the first time in her career and it marks the 13th consecutive year that Florida State has had a student-athlete be named an All-American. Castellanos becomes the 30th All-American from Florida State in the history of the NSCAA/United Soccer Coaches.

The sophomore forward led the ACC and ranked second in the NCAA with 19 goals scored and finished with six multi-goal games (UNC Greensboro, Kentucky, Troy, Notre Dame, Ole Miss and Arizona), which is an FSU single season record.

Castellanos was also honored this fall as one of three finalists for the FIFA Best Women’s Player of the Year, as well as one of the three finalists for the Puskas Award. She became just the third current NCAA student-athlete to be chosen as a top 10 Player of the Year nominee, and the first to be a top three finalist in the history of the award. Lieke Martens from the Netherlands was chosen as the 2017 FIFA Women’s Player of the Year.

Her goal in stoppage time against Cameroon in the 2016 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup was the only goal by female to be among the top 10 considered for the Puskas Award, given to the “most beautiful” goal scored in the world. Olivier Giraud’s goal against Crystal Palace was voted by fans as the 2017 Puskas Award winner.
