Carson, Calif. – Florida State freshman Walter Dix (Coral Springs, Fla./Coral Springs) opened the first round of the 100m dash at the U.S. Outdoor Track and Field Championships with a time of 10.27 in the 100m dash. The senior meet, taking place at the Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif., on Friday, June 24, 2005, gives American athletes the chance to earn a spot on the U.S. team that will travel to the IAAF World Championships in Helsinki, Finland from August 6-14, 2005.
Dix, an NCAA Champion and five-time All-American, had the top time in his heat and was the fifth advancer in the group comprised of amateurs and professionals. The NCAA East Region 100m and 200m Champion will run in the semi-finals tomorrow at 3:35 p.m.
Freshman heptathlete Heather Leblanc (Live Oak, Fla./Suwannee) competed in the two events, the long jump and javelin before not starting the 800m. The rookie placed tenth in the high jump with a distance of 16’7.75″ (5.07m) and 16th in the javelin in 87’01” (26.54m).
