TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The 31st-ranked FSU women’s golf team wrapped up the 2018 Florida State Matchup Tournament with another strong round Saturday, finishing the weekend in fifth overall. Sophomore Amanda Doherty finished as the runner-up for the tournament title shooting eight-under after three rounds.

The Seminoles got off to a slow start in the tournament Friday in round one but put together back-to-back solid rounds to close out the tournament at four-over and in fifth place. Only four of the 12 schools participating finished the three rounds under par as the tournament was played in shotgun format each round to dodge predicted inclement weather.

“We learned quite a bit in how we handled things this weekend,” said head coach Amy Bond. “We showed many positive signs in many different ways but also our weakness showed quite a bit.

“We need to continue to work on our short game, our wedges and making some more putts. I mean realistically that’s the way our golf game goes. When we putt it and chip it well, we tend to play well.”

Doherty added to her list of top 10 finishes with the fifth of her young career. She shot 208 for the tournament, carded three sub-par rounds and improved her score each time out. The Atlanta native also recorded three consecutive holes under par in two of the three rounds finishing eight-under for the tournament and four-under in round three.

“Amanda played a great three rounds of golf,” said Bond. “I am so proud of her. She is continuing to get better each week and every time out on the golf course. She is putting together solid round after solid round. I am excited to see what the rest of the spring holds for her. If she continues at this rate, she can have a pretty special year.”

“It was a good tournament overall,” said Doherty. “It started off a little rough the first day but I just had to stay patient and try to bounce back. As a team we weren’t exactly where we wanted to be but I think that is good motivation for us moving forward to work hard the rest of the spring.”

Kayla Jones also completed a strong tournament on Saturday finishing in a tie for 15th. The Milton, GA native highlighted her round with three straight birdies on holes 9, 10 and 11. It was the sixth top 20 finish of the senior’s career.

“My game is in a much better place than it was a couple of months ago,” said Jones. “I have been working hard during the offseason and I have seen a lot of improvement from myself and my teammates.”

The Seminoles will continue their spring season at The Dickson Invitational in Woodlands, Texas February 26-27. The tournament will be hosted by the University of Houston.  Check back to Seminoles.com for full coverage and all the news on the FSU women’s golf team.
