MACON, Ga. (seminoles.com) – Florida State sophomore Amanda Doherty shot a 1-under par 71 in the final round and finished in a tie for second place in the individual standings as play in the Brickyard Collegiate at the Brickyard Golf Club came to a close. Doherty’s individual finish tied her Seminole career best, marked the second time this spring she has finished in second place in an event and her under par total marked the third time in four events this spring she has finished below par in a three-round tournament.
The Seminoles competed in the 14-team event as five individuals with no team score being recorded.
“The last two rounds I hit the ball better and was able to get a few putts to drop,” said Doherty. “I feel good about ACC’s, but I am going to do a lot of work on my putting to get ready.”
Doherty (Atlanta, Ga.) carded her second consecutive below par round as she totaled 70-71 in the final two rounds of the event to finish with a 1-under par total of 215. Doherty made quite a charge for the individual championship as she was four strokes under par on her final 15 holes of the round. She totaled two birdies on her final four holes as she made a grand effort to win the championship.
Doherty finished two strokes behind the individual champion – Morgan Baxendale of Vanderbilt. Baxendale carded scores of 73-69-71 for a 3-under par total of 213. Baxendale made it tough on Doherty as she played 17 holes at par or better with one birdie to shoot a final round 71 for a tournament score of 213.
Entering the ACC Championship (April 21-23 at the Grandover Resort in Greensboro, N.C.), Doherty is a total of four strokes under par in her last two events, one stroke under par for the entire spring, has finished under par in five of nine events this year and leads the Seminoles with a career-low 71.96 average.
Freshman Kathleen Sumner (Charleston, S.C.) finished in a tie for seventh place in the individual standings as she finished with a 222 score for the 54-hole event. She played her best golf of the final round over the course of her last 13 holes as she was a cumulative total of 1-under par. Sumer totaled one birdie and 11 holes scored at par in the final round. She totaled a career-best 145 score in her first two rounds to set a personal best for a 36-hole score.
Sophomore Sandra Salonen (Espoo, Finland) carded a 77 in the final round and finished with a three round total of 233 and in a career-best tied for 47th place in the individual standings. She played her best golf of the tournament in the final two rounds with scores of 76-77. Salonen totaled one birdie and 13 holes scored at par or better in the final round. She totaled four birdies during the final round.
Florida State begins postseason play at the ACC Championships at Grandover April 21-23. The Seminoles play host to the NCAA Tallahassee Regional Championships May 7-8-9 at Don Veller Seminole Golf Club with admission free each of the three days of the event.
