EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. (seminoles.com) – Florida State sophomore Amanda Doherty shot a 1-under par 71 and is in a tie for sixth place in the individual standings, and the No. 14 Florida State women’s golf team is in eighth place in the team standings after the first round of the ANNIKA Intercollegiate at the Olympic Hills Golf Club.  Doherty was one of only 10 players in the field of 60 players to shoot under par in the first round and is only three strokes out of the individual lead.  The Seminoles were a cumulative total of two strokes over par after making the turn and finished the round as one of eight teams in the 12-team tournament with at least three players in the top-30 of the individual standings.

No. 1 Arkansas, with four players in the top-15 of the individual standings, is in first place in the team standings.  The Lady Razorbacks were the only team to shoot par or better in the first round with an even par score of 288.  Robynn Ree of Southern California and Mika Liu of Stanford are tied for the individual lead with identical scores of 4-under par 68.  The first round was played in a steady rain and a biting wind.

After being rated as the nation’s toughest women’s collegiate tournament in the nation in 2016, The ANNIKA Intercollegiate in 2017 is closely following suit.  The Seminoles are competing against the No. 1 Lady Razorbacks, No. 6 Southern Cal, No. 10 Furman No. 12 South Carolina and No. 23 Stanford along with perennial powers Baylor, UCLA, Georgia, Texas, Minnesota and Miami.  The event is sponsored by the famed Annika Sorenstam

“We made a good comeback and I’m proud of the girls for finishing well,” said Head Coach Amy Bond.  “We struggled early and didn’t handle the golf course or the weather well as it rained all day.  They all showed a lot of heart, stepped up on the back nine and righted the ship.  We now have the next two days to stay within ourselves, figure out the parts of our games that were exposed and finish strong.  I am confident in this group and am looking forward to the next two days.”

Doherty (Atlanta, Ga.) continued to sizzle during the Seminoles’ fall season as he carded her fourth consecutive score of 71 or better.  She was nearly perfect during the round with two birdies and 17 holes played at par or better.  Doherty was never above par and, after a birdie on her 11th hole of the day, was below par for her final eight holes of the day.  She closed her round at 1-under par over her final 13 holes.

Doherty is averaging a team-leading 71.86 strokes in the first seven rounds and three tournaments of the season.  She has carded six consecutive rounds at 72 or better and is a total of two strokes under par for the season.

“Amanda put together a really good round of golf today,” said Bond.  “She chipped and putted really well.  She felt like she didn’t hit the ball well, but she was strong all day without her “A” game.”

Seniors Kim Metraux (Lausanne, Switzerland) and Kayla Jones (Milton, Ga.) carded identical 4-over par scores of 76 and are tied for 29th in the individual standings.  Metraux and Jones led the Seminoles with three birdies each during the round.

Metraux played her best golf at the end of the round with all three of her birdies coming on her last six holes, including two on her last three.  She improved from 6-over par with six holes to play to 4-over par to conclude the round.

Jones also played well to close the round with two of her three birdies coming on the final six holes.  She was 5-over par with six holes to play, and thanks to two birdies and three more holes played at par, she closed the round at 4-over par.

As a team, Florida State counted 10 birdies in the first round of the ANNIKA Intercollegiate to bring their season total to 97.  Bond will donate $10 for each birdie made by one of her players this fall to hurricane relief in the states of Florida and Texas (#birdiesfortxfl).

Florida State will play with Furman and Baylor in the Monday’s second round with play beginning for the Seminoles, Paladins and Bears at 10:00 ET from hole No. 10.
