MACON, Ga. (seminoles.com) – Sophomore Amanda Doherty is in a tie for second place, and freshman Kathleen Sumner is in a tie for fifth place in the individual standings with one round remaining to be played at the Brickyard Collegiate at the Brickyard Golf Club. Doherty begins play in Tuesday’s final round only two strokes out of the individual lead while Sumner is only three strokes back as both players aim for their first career individual victories as Seminoles.
The Seminoles are competing in the 14-team event as five individuals with no team score being recorded.
Doherty (Atlanta, Ga.) carded a 2-under par score of 70 in the second round and has a two-round total of 144. Sumner (Charleston, S.C.) totaled an even par 72 in the second round and has a two-round total of 145. Both Doherty and Sumner are chasing Morgan Baxendale of Vanderbilt who is the leader after 36 holes with a two-round total of 142. Baxendale is the only golfer in the 78-player field with an under par total after two rounds of play.
Doherty has carded scores of 74-70 in the first two rounds of the event. Her score of 70 in the second round marked the third time this spring and seventh time this year she has earned a score of 70 or better in a single round. Doherty was at her best over the final 11 holes of the round as she carded four birdies and seven more holes scored at par. She was four strokes under par on her last 11 holes of the round. Doherty’s score of 70 on Tuesday was tied for the third best score of the day and was one of four scores under par during the round.
Only two strokes behind the individual leader, Doherty enters the final round in a tie for second place with Madison Caldwell of Kennesaw State and Louise Yu of Vanderbilt as she plays for the first win of her Florida State career. She finished in a career-best second place at the Florida State Match-Up earlier this spring.
Sumner, who carded an even par 72 in the second round, begins play in the final round only three strokes out of the individual lead. She totaled three birdies (to bring her tournament total to seven) and was never more than one stroke over par during the round. Sumner’s 145 total for the first 36 holes of the tournament rank as the best two-round total of her Seminole career.
“Today felt a lot better (than yesterday) but the putts just weren’t dropping,” said Sumner. “I feel really good about playing tomorrow.”
Sumner will also play for the first victory of her Florida State career. She finished in a career-best tied for sixth place in the Dickson Intercollegiate earlier this spring. Sumner’s score of 72 marked the sixth single round score of 72 or better with her career best of 71 coming during the Dickson.
The single best stroke improvement among the five Seminoles playing in the event (seven strokes) was turned in by senior Lexie Flerlage (Venice, Fla.).
lorida State closes out play in the Brickyard Collegiate on Tuesday with a shotgun start beginning at 9:00 a.m. Each of the Seminoles’ five golfers begin play at 9:00 with Flerlage (hole 17), Ashley Mangan (hole 16), Sandra Salonen (hole 16), Sumner (hole 15) and Doherty (Hole 14) beginning their days on the backside of the course.
