Doherty, Sumner Lead Women’s Golf At Evans Derby Experience

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (seminoles.com) — Sophomore Amanda Doherty and freshman Kathleen Sumner are tied for 14th in the individual standings, and Florida State is in third place in the team standings after two rounds of the Evans Derby Experience at the Auburn University Club. Playing in one of the toughest tournaments in all of college golf, the Seminoles are only 11 strokes out of the lead in the team standings which is currently held by Arkansas.

No. 3 Arkansas and No. 5 Duke carded identical team rounds of 279 and moved into the top two spots in the team standings. The Seminoles, who led the team race after third first 18 holes, are nipping at the heels of both the Razorbacks and the Blue Devils. Florida State is playing for its best finish of the spring season after earning a pair of fifth place finishes in its first two events of the spring.

Maria Fassi of Arkansas carded a 5-under par 67 and is the individual leader with a two-day total of 131. She and teammate Maria Hoyos hold the first two spots in the individual standings.

“We didn’t have our best stuff today, but we still managed to hang in there,” said Head Coach Amy Bond. “Today was an important round for us as we worked hard to follow-up on our best round of the year. We have given ourselves an opportunity to continue to grow as we play in the final group of the round with both Arkansas and Duke.”

Both Doherty (Atlanta, Ga.) and Sumner (Charleston, S.C.) have carded back-to-back under par scores of 71 in the first two rounds of the event. Doherty continued to play outstanding golf as she was never above even par through the second round. Sumner, too, played a majority of her round under par, and was as many as two strokes under par for the round.

“Today was an interesting day,” said Sumner. “There was a stretch when a couple of shots got away from me, but I was able to make up for those shots. As a team, we didn’t do as well as we had hoped, and we are all excited about playing again tomorrow.”

Florida State is one of four teams in the 12-team field with multiple golfers in the top 15 of the individual standings. Only 22 of the 75 golfers in the field have earned below par scores over the course of the first two rounds.

The tournament will conclude on Tuesday with a shotgun start beginning at 8:00 a.m.
