Doherty’s 68 Leads Women’s Golf At Stanford

Second Round Team Results / Second Round Individual Results / Third Round Tee Times

PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. (seminoles.com) – Sophomore Amanda Doherty is in seventh place in the individual standings, and the Seminole women’s golf team is in a tie for eighth place in the team standings with one round remaining to be played in the Stanford Intercollegiate at the Poppy Hills Golf Club.  Doherty shot a 68 in the second round which tied her for the best round of the day among the 74 golfers in the field as she moved into position to earn her first career victory and her fifth career top-10 individual finish.  She begins play in round three only six strokes out of the individual lead.

No. 8 ranked Stanford maintained its lead in the team standings and continues to hold a seven-stroke lead over No. 4 UCLA.  Northwestern was the only team to shoot under par as a team in the second round; the Wildcats moved from seventh in the team standings to their current position of third.  Hannah Kim of Northwestern is in first place in the individual standings for the second day in a row with a two-day total of 136.  She is one of six golfers with under par totals through 36 holes.

“We became a better team today,” said Head Coach Amy Bond.  “It’s always a goal of ours to get better in each and every round, and we did that today.  We moved up a spot (in the standings) and with a good round tomorrow we can earn a really good finish in a tough event.  Our goal for tomorrow is to execute our vision and continue to play good golf.”

Doherty (Atlanta, Ga.) shot the second best score of her career, a 3-under par 68, in the second round to bring her two-day total to 142.  She carded four birdies and one eagle in coming within two strokes of tying her career best round of 66.  Doherty was 1-under par with two birdies on her front nine and 2-under par with two birdies and the second eagle of her career on the back nine.  She has now carded a hole-in-one (Sept. 23 at the Schooner Fall Classic) and an eagle during the first four events of the year.   Doherty is averaging a team-low and career-best 71.73 strokes in 11 rounds during four events this season.

“Amanda played a great round of golf today,” said Bond.  “It was an especially good round considering she had a double on 10 and was able to recover and shoot a 68.  I really thought her eagle was going to go in the hole – she hit a 3-wood on her tee shot to about three feet.”

Freshman Kathleen Sumner (Charleston, S.C.) carded a 4-over par score of 75 and is in a tie for 23rd place in the individual standings with a two-day total of 147.  She has carded scores of 72 and 75 in the first 36 holes and her total of 147 is the best of her Seminole career for the first 36 holes of an event.

Sumner carded the first eagle of her Florida State career on the par 5 hole No. 9.  Her eagle helped her finish the final 10 holes of the round at 1-under par.  Over the course of her final 10 holes, she carded one eagle and eight holes scored at par.  Sumner closed her round with five consecutive holes scored at par.

Senior Kim Metraux (Lausanne, Switzerland) carded her best score of the first two rounds with a 2-over par score of 73.  Combined with her first round score of 76, she has a two-day total of 149 and is in a tie for 39th place in the individual standings.  Metraux totaled two birdies and 14 holes scored at par or better in the second round.

As a team, Florida State counted 11 birdies in the second round of the Stanford Intercollegiate to bring its season total to 144.  Bond will donate $10 for each birdie made by one of her players this fall to hurricane relief in the states of Florida and Texas (#birdiesfortxfl).

Florida State plays with San Jose State and Oklahoma State in the final round of the Stanford Intercollegiate.  The Seminoles, Cowgirls and Spartans begin play at 10:30 ET from hole No. 1.
