TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – After helping the Florida State Seminoles upset archrival Florida last Friday at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Fla., sophomore Aziz Dougaz was named the ACC Player of the Week, the conference office announced on Tuesday. The honor is the first of Dougaz’s career.
“I’m really proud of Aziz coming up with the big win on Friday,” Florida State head coach Dwayne Hultquist. “He came back from an 0-3 start and played his best tennis of the year.”
Dougaz faced No. 10 Alfredo Perez of Florida and defeated him 6-4, 6-3 in straight sets to give the Seminoles a 2-1 lead in the match that they would not relinquish en route to a 4-2 victory over the No. 15/11-ranked Gators.
In doubles play, Dougaz and junior Guy Iradukunda, the No. 69-ranked doubles pair, nearly clinched the doubles point with an upset win over No. 4 Perez and Johannes Ingildsen, but Florida State clinched the doubles point with a win on court three with Dougaz/Iradukunda leading 5-4 on match point.
“I was really pleased with their effort being at match point to win the doubles,” Hultquist said.
Dougaz is the first Seminole to win ACC Player of the Week honors since Benjamin Lock, who was twice honored last season before finishing runner-up in ACC Player of the Year voting in 2016.
With the upset over Florida, the Seminoles have moved up to No. 28 in the ITA team rankings.
Next up, the Seminoles host an ACC doubleheader with the women’s team on Friday March 17 and Sunday March 19. The men’s team will face Clemson at 5:30 p.m. on Friday and Miami at 12:00 p.m. on Sunday.
