Duke Takes Commanding Lead At ACC/SEC Women’s Golf Challenge

Oct. 24, 2003

DESTIN, Fla. –
No 1 ranked Duke shot tournament record 276 and Blue Devil senior Virada Nirapathpongporn shot a tournament record tying 67 to propel Duke to the first round lead at the Chrysler ACC/SEC Women’s Golf Challenge at the Raven Course at Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort. Duke’s team score shattered the previous tournament record of 294 (most recently by Auburn in 2002) and Nirapathpongporn’s score tied the tournament record for a single round (most recently by Duke’s Elizabeth Janangelo in 2002).

On a picture perfect day with little wind and no threat of rain, six golfers shot below par and another three finished the day at even par.

Duke has won its first three tournaments of the fall and looks to be headed for a fourth consecutive team victory. The Blue Devils lead second place Auburn by 13 strokes. All five of Duke’s golfers shot 71 or better in the first round. Nirapathpongporn led with a 67 while teammates Elizabeth Janangelo and Anna Grzebien carded two- under par scores of 69 and Leigh Ann Hardin and Brittany Lang totaled identical scores of 71.

Auburn, the defending tournament champion, is in second place after the first round with a team score of 289. Diana Ramage of Auburn, the defending individual champion, is not participating in the event because of an arm injury. Auburn was led by Maria Martinez, who shot a 68 and is currently in second place, and Jennifer Head, who shot a 70 and is in a tie for fifth place.

Florida State, the host team, is in seventh place after round one with a score of 306. Senior Katie Quinney (Atlantic Beach, Fla.) led the Seminoles with a season-low 72. Senior Carrie Sordel (Windermere, Fla.) is the second highest ranking Seminole as she carded a 74. Junior Caroline Larsson (Danderyd, Sweden), senior Alison Curdt (St. Louis, Mo.) and freshman Jaclyn Burch (Wildwood, Mo.) are also competing for Florida State. Junior Tyler Johnson (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.) and Kristina Prestipino (Coral Springs, Fla.) are competing as individuals for Florida State.

The second round of the tournament is Saturday morning beginning at 7:30 CST. The final round is set for an 8 a.m. shotgun start Sunday.
