Duke Takes Lead at ACC/SEC Women’s Golf Challenge

Sept. 28, 2002

DESTIN, Fla. –
The Duke University women’s golf team overtook Auburn and is in first place in the team standings after day two of the Chrysler ACC/SEC Women’s Golf Challenge at the Raven Course at the Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort. The Blue Devils shot a 293 team score and lead Auburn by one stroke heading into Sunday’s third and final round.

Duke, the defending NCAA Champion, begins third-round play with a one stroke lead over Auburn, a two stroke lead over Mississippi State and a seven stroke lead over both Florida State and Florida who are tied for fourth. Mississippi State fell from first place after the first day while the Seminoles jumped from sixth to fourth as they shot the second best team round of the day.

Elizabeth Janangelo continued to lead Duke and the individual standings as she carded a one-over par 72 Saturday for a two day-total of 139. She begins third-round play with a two-stoke lead over Diana Ramage of Auburn University who shot a one-under par 70 in the second round.

Eight teams are represented in the top-10 of the individual standings. Only one Duke golfer, Janangelo, is currently seeded in the top-10. The Blue Devils, though, have three players in the top-25 and four in the top-30 of the individual standings. Auburn has four players in the top 30 of the individual standings while Mississippi State, Florida State and Florida each have three.

Sunday’s final round, a shotgun start, begins at 8 a.m. Duke is participating in the ACC/SEC Challenge for the first time and is looking to win the event for the first time. Florida won the event in 2001 and Auburn in 2000.
