Ewers Sprints To ACC Performer Of The Week Honor

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – For the first time this outdoor season Florida State junior sprinter Andre Ewers has claimed ACC Men’s Track Performer of the Week honors.

Ewers was victorious in his outdoor 200-meter dash debut for the Seminoles at Friday’s Tom Jones Memorial in Gainesville. The junior college transfer turned back a field of 39 competitors, including Olympians LaShawn Merritt, Churandy Martina and Derrick Silva, with the top collegiate all-conditions time in the country this season.

His 20.05 wind-aided (3.1) time bumped USC’s Michael Norman (20.06) from the top spot nationally.

Running in the third heat the former Butler County (Kan.) College star ran away from the competition, which included NC State’s Dylan Peebles, who was the heat runner-up in 20.46, and last week’s ACC Performer of the Week. Ewers began his day handling the second leg on FSU’s 4×100 relay team, which placed third among college teams in 39.82; the Noles’ second-fastest time of the season.

Ewers is the sixth Seminole to earn Performer of the Week honors this outdoor season, joining Steven Cross, Trey Cunningham, Austin Droogsma, Ka’Tia Seymour and Lauri Paredes.

In addition to his nation-leading 200-meter mark, Ewers ranks third nationally in the 100-meter dash (10.04), which he ran at the Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays in late March. The Lauderhill, Fla. product by way of Jamaica not only leads the ACC in both events, but is also a part of FSU’s conference-leading 4×100 relay (39.65).
