Florida Claims Team Title At Dodge ACC/SEC Women’s Golf Shootout

Sept. 30, 2001

DESTIN, Fla. –
The University of Florida women’s golf team won the team title and South Carolina’s Kristy McPherson won the individual title at the second annual Dodge ACC/SEC Shootout at the Raven Golf Course. Florida led the event wire to wire and defeated runner-up Mississippi State by 12 strokes. McPherson shot a five over-par 76 in Sunday’s final round to hold on for the individual championship. She defeated Sarah Johnston of Alabama by one stroke. For the second year in a row, the five Southeastern Conference teams won the conference championship.

Florida was very consistent over the three-day event and finished today’s event with a 294 team score. It marked the second 294 team scored in three days and was the highest team score of the day. The Gators were led by freshman Whitney Code, who finished fifth in the individual standings, and sophomore Amanda Dick who finished tied for seventh. Florida placed five players in the top 18 of the individual standings.

“Our girls worked very hard for this championship,” said Jill Briles-Hinton. “Every player on our team contributed equally and we are very proud of them. This (the Raven) is a tough course and they all played well during all three rounds.”

It was the third tournament victory for Briles-Hinton as Florida’s head coach and the second in less than one year. The Gators won the 2001 Ryder/Florida Championships in April.

McPherson held on to defeat Johnston who made a strong charge in the third round. McPherson shot a personal tournament high 76 while Johnston shot a personal tournament low 69. The victory was McPherson’s second, she won the 2001 SEC Tournament individual title.

“I didn’t play great in the third round, but thankfully, it was good enough to win,” said McPherson. I didn’t make too many mistakes that cost me on a very tough course and was able to win the event.”

Florida State’s Kristin Tamulis led the Seminoles with a 20th-place finish. She shot a five-over par 76 in the third round and finished with a 232 total. Senior Kelley Henderson finished in a tie for 26th place with a score of 238.
