Florida Department Of Agriculture Presents Sunshine Showdown Series

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services has once again joined forces with two of the state’s most successful and popular sports programs – the Florida Gators and Florida State Seminoles – and will tap into the Sunshine State’s passion for college sports throughout each school’s athletic year by highlighting each contest between the two as a “Fresh From Florida Sunshine Showdown.”

Through the statewide multi-media assets of Florida and Florida State athletics, this partnership reminds fans of the impact the agriculture industry has on Florida’s economy and encourages fans to support Florida’s farmers and fishermen by asking for Fresh From Florida products when they shop or dine out. In addition to messaging around Sunshine Showdown match-ups, a dedicated website, SunshineShowdown.com, keeps fans informed of recent Sunshine Showdown results, upcoming contests and recipes and information about Fresh From Florida.

This year, fans can visit the site and register for the chance to win a limited edition Florida State University Bowflex Max Trainer® M5, 2018 football season tickets, 2018-19 men’s basketball season tickets and more in the “Eat Fresh. Get Fit. Fresh From Florida Sunshine Showdown Sweepstakes.”  A separate social media hashtag battle will pit the two fan bases against each other in a friendly competition to see which side garners the most support in real time.

With the schools squaring off each season in not only football, but also soccer, volleyball, swimming & diving, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s tennis, softball and baseball, the Sunshine Showdown calendar matches up with the seasonality of Fresh From Florida products. Both institutions recognize the significance of the intense rivalry, as well as the strength of the joint platform.

“Many of our Gator fans and boosters are leaders in the Florida Agricultural community”, said Scott Stricklin, Director of Athletics at University of Florida. “Reminding our fans of the impact of buying local products and supporting this significant state industry through our great rivalry is a natural fit.”

“Fresh From Florida’s sponsorship of the Sunshine Showdown has been a perfect fit,” said Florida State University Vice President and Director of Athletics Stan Wilcox. “While competition between Florida State and Florida always brings out the best in both schools, the significance of the Sunshine Showdown continues to grow.  Just last year the Seminoles and the Gators finished first and second, respectively, for CBSSports.com’s “Best College Sports Program”, and both finished among the Director’s Cup Top 13 programs in the country.”

Agriculture is a $100 billion industry in Florida and Floridians can support their neighbors and communities by buying locally-grown and harvested products.
