Florida State Athletic Department Reaching Out To Hurricane Victims

Sept. 29, 2005

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. –
The Florida State University Athletic Department is reaching out to the victims of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita with three events designed to help the displaced and injured people get back on their feet and back in to their homes. The Student Athlete Advisory Council is currently conducting a clothing drive, the department will sponsor a blood drive on Oct. 7 and coaches Bowden, Graff, Hamilton, Krikorian, Martin and Semrau have donated items to the Coaches Care program.

“Our student-athletes really felt the need to give as much of themselves as they could,” said Director of Athletics, Dave Hart, Jr. “The SAAC spearheaded the drive and took their ideas back to their respective teams. They were met with overwhelming support and the administration backed them fully.”

The clothing drive has already brought in hundreds of items which will be dispersed throughout the affected region. The items that will be collected will be given to the Red Cross for distribution to the neediest of the victims. Items are still being collected and can be dropped off in the Moore Athletic Center in the north end zone of Doak Campbell Stadium.

The Blood Drive is scheduled to take place in the parking lot of the Donald L. Tucker Center (Civic Center) in Tallahassee on Oct. 7 from 2:30 – 6:30 p.m. Those interested in donating blood can come to the Civic Center when they come into town for the Seminoles’ football game against Wake Forest the next day. The first 100 participants in the blood drive will receive a gift from the Department of Athletics.

The Coaches Care program is the brainchild of a number of prominent coaches and athletes (both professional and collegiate) from around the nation who have joined together to raise funds to help the victims of the horrible tragedy. The donated items can be viewed and bid on at allcoachescare.com. Collectors items that have been donated include authentic signed jerseys and game used basketballs and footballs.

The Seminole women’s basketball teams, one of the top philanthropic teams in the department, is sending basketball apparel to the displaced University of New Orleans women’s basketball team which is now attending school and practicing at the University of Texas at Tyler.
