Florida State Begins Preparation For NC State On Thursday Night

Oct. 11, 2008

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. –
In what was considered a “modified Monday practice” the Florida State football team began its preparations for Thursday night’s game at NC State. The Seminoles practiced in shells (shoulder pads and helmets) for 18 periods as they began implementing their game plan for their game against the Wolfpack. Florida State is in the midst of its off week; after defeating Miami last Saturday, 41-39, at Dolphins Stadium, the team is off until Oct. 16 when it travels to play the 10th nationally televised Thursday night game in school history. The Seminoles are 5-4 in Thursday night games dating back to a 1983 victory over Louisville.

Florida State will practice Sunday, Monday and Tuesday before travelling to Raleigh on Wednesday.

Coach Bowden
Opening Statement

I thought we had a pretty good practice. We seem to be in pretty good shape. (Jermaine) Thomas got a little hurt last week, scared us, but he seems to be much better today. He says he’s much better so I think this week off has probably helped us with our injury situation. We look like we’re in pretty good shape.”

On Patrick Robinson:
“Robinson had a good day of practice today. I liked what I saw. He had a couple of nice breaks on the ball.”

On Thursday night games:
“It’s different. You’ve broken your routine of getting ready on Saturdays. It is different. It’s an entirely different feeling, just sitting around in your motel all day and not watching football games with the fact that there’s no games on. It’s kind of a boring day.”

On NC State:
“We’ve had some good lickings up there. One of our best teams got beat up there. We played for the national championship that year and they beat us during the season and we were heavily favored. They hustle good, their guys seem to hit good. They’re a team that could get you and they have a very dangerous quarterback.”

On what Thursday night will be like for Coach Amato:
“It will be interesting because it’s his alma mater and he coached there. There will probably be a lot of people pulling for him.”

Linebacker Derek Nicholson

On playing games in the state of North Carolina since he’s from there:
“It’s great. I love going home to North Carolina and I love playing at home. It’s like a homecoming so I’m very excited. I’m looking forward to it.”

Running Back Antone Smith:

On this week of practice:
“This week has been very good. Everybody’s been out here working, getting the job done, concentrating on details and just trying to get better.”

On the different routine:
“It’s not going to hurt us. You just got to prepare a little bit different. Everyone is still going out and working hard. We know we still got to get our assignments down and everything because we’ve got a big game, a big ACC game.”

On Thursday night games:
“I like them because everybody is watching you. We’ll be the only team on TV so everybody will be watching Florida State.”

Defensive Back Michael Ray Garvin:

On Special Teams’ play:
“Special teams are going to be important like always. We’ve got to take pride in our special teams and do what we’ve got to do to make plays on kickoffs, kickoff returns, punts, punt blocks and field goals and field goal blocks.”

“Speed always kills so definitely our speed will be a great value to us. Their (NC State) kickoff returns are pretty good so we are going to have to lock them down. On our kickoff returns we’ve got to just take it to the house as always.”
