Florida State Final Game Notes vs. Florida Southern
AGAINST FCS OPPONENTS
Florida State improves to 15-0 against FCS opponents.
Florida State’s 477 yards passing is the most versus an FCS opponent since the Seminoles racked up 485 yards in the air in a 62-10 win over the Citadel in 2005.
SPREAD IT OUT
For the second straight game 10 or more receivers caught passes, as 12 Seminoles recorded receptions.
The record is 14 set on Oct. 22, 2005 versus Duke.
MANUEL LOGS FIRST 300-YARD PASSING GAME
Three minutes into the second half, junior quarterback EJ Manuel completed a nine-yard pass to Rodney Smith, giving him 308 yards – his first 300-yard-passing game of his career.
He finished with 329 yards passing.
The last time FSU threw for 300 yards in a game came on Oct. 22, 2009 when Christian Ponder completed 33 of 40 passes for 395 yards in a 30-27 win in Chapel Hill, N.C.
Manuel’s previous career-best in yards was 288 yards against Virginia Tech in the 2010 ACC Championship Game.
MORE CAREER-BESTS FROM MANUEL
Manuel tallied career-bests in completions (24), attempts (35), passing yards (329) and touchdowns (four).
By halftime he already had career-highs in touchdowns (three) and passing yards (299).
He completed passes to nine different receivers for the second straight game.
His 53-yard pass to freshman receiver Christian Greene tied his career-best. He threw a 53-yard pass against Clemson in 2010, as well. It’s his second pass of 50 yards or more this season.
His previous career-best for completions was 23 against Virginia Tech in 2010.
His previous career-best for attempts was 34 against ULM last week.
TRICKETT AND GREENE AT IT AGAIN
After hooking up for a touchdown on the very first play of both of their careers, redshirt freshman quarterback Clint Trickett and freshman wideout Rashad Greene connected for two more scores.
Trickett found Greene for a 29-yard score with 36 seconds left in the third quarter and then again for a 69-yard score with 11:38 remaining in the fourth quarter.
Greene’s season statistics in his short career: three receptions, 126 yards (42.0 ypc) and three touchdowns.
Trickett’s season statistics in his short career: 7-of-8 for 176 yards and three touchdowns. He also had a four-yard rushing score against the Buccaneers.
BIG NUMBERS FROM THE FSU OFFENSE
Florida State scored 62 points. The last time FSU scored 60 or more points came when it pasted Western Carolina for 69 in 2008.
Florida State tallied 647 yards of total offense. The last time FSU had 550 or more yards of total offense came against NC State in 2009 (555).
FSU passed for 477 yards. The last time FSU threw for more than 400 yards came against Citadel in 2005 (485).
REED TIES Greg Carr AT NO. 5 IN CAREER RECEPTIONS
Bert Reed had three receptions, giving him 148 for his career to tie Greg Carr for fifth on the FSU all-time receptions list. No.4 is E.G. Green at 166.
GREENE’S SECOND RECEIVING SCORE THE LONGEST SINCE 2009
Greene’s 69-yard touchdown catch was the longest reception for a touchdown since 2009 when Christian Ponder hit Rod Owens for a 98-yard score versus North Carolina.
SCORELESS STREAK SNAPPED
When Charleston Southern scored on a half back pass from Teddy Allen to Carson Leshin with 10:33 remaining in the third quarter it snapped an opponent scoreless streak that dated back to the 2010 Chick-fil-A Bowl.
FSU held opponents scoreless for a total span of 106:22. The last touchdown scored by opponent came when South Carolina scored with 11:46 to go in the fourth quarter on Dec. 31, 2010.
The Buccaneer score also snapped FSU’s defensive streak of not allowing a touchdown at home that lasted 147:22, dating back to the first quarter against Florida on Nov. 27, 2010. The Gators scored at the 10:43 mark in the first quarter, the last home TD FSU allowed prior to tonight’s game.
HOPKINS CONTINUES STREAKS
Junior kicker Dustin Hopkins made field goals at 1:22 in the first quarter and with 11 seconds remaining in the first half, giving him 11 straight made – a career-best.
He has made 14 consecutive FGs of 35-yards-or-less.
He has made 98 consecutive PATS. The FSU record is 108 by Derek Schmidt.
He has now made 35 consecutive PAT attempts in the month of the September.
He has made at least one PAT in all 29 career games.
He has made 109 overall combined kicks (PATs/FGs)
WILDER MAKES FIRST APPEARANCE
Freshman running back James Wilder Jr. made his first appearance of his career at the 3:51 mark in the third quarter, rushing for five yards. He finished with 76 yards on 10 carries, including a 41-yard run on the game’s last play.
FSU forced Charleston Southern into eight three-and-out series.
FSU held Charleston Southern to just three first downs (including none in the first half). The FSU record for lowest first downs by an opponent is two by the Citadel in 1962.
BACK-TO-BACK GAMES HOLDING OPPONENT TO UNDER 100 ON GROUND AND IN AIR
Florida State held Charleston Southern to just 21 yards rushing and 63 yards passing, the second straight game FSU held an opponent under 100 on the ground and through the air. ULM had 99 yards rushing and 92 yards passing in the season-opener.
The last time FSU held an opponent to under 100 yards in both passing and rushing in back-to-back games was in 1980. Florida State held Tulsa to just 90 yards rushing and 70 yards passing on Nov. 1, 1980. The next game, FSU held Virginia Tech to 83 yards rushing and 57 yards passing on Nov. 8, 1980.
The last time FSU held back-to-back teams to under 100 yards of passing was in 1999. Virginia tossed for just 76 yards on Oct. 30, 1999 a game before Maryland threw for 73 yards on Nov. 13, 1999.
The last time FSU held back-to-back opponents to under 100 yards rushing came in 2010, when Samford rushed for 77 yards on Sept. 4. Oklahoma rushed for 93 yards a week later on Sept. 11. The Seminoles actually made it three straight in 2010, as BYU gained just 76 yards on the ground on Sept. 18.
Charleston Southern totaled just 84 yards of total offense a week after ULM had 191 yards total. The last time FSU held an opponent to under 200 yards of total offense came in 2010. BYU had just 191 yards on Sept. 18 and Wake Forest had 185 total yards on Sept. 25.
FIRST HALF DEFENSIVE DOMINANCE
FSU held Charleston Southern to just eight yards of total offense in the first half. All eight yards came on the ground.
The Buccaneers were 0-for-6 passing in the first half.
The last time an opponent complete one pass or less in the first half came on Nov. 5, 2005 when NC State was 1-for-7 at the intermission.
The eight rushing yards were the lowest allowed in the first half by FSU since Duke rushed for five yards on eight attempts in 2007. FIRST QUARTER DEFENSE DOMINATES
Florida State held an opponent to no first downs in the first quarter for the first time since Sept. 29, 2007 in a 21-14 win over Alabama in Jacksonville, Fla.
The last time an opponent had zero first downs in a quarter came when NC State had zero in the second quarter on Oct. 28, 2010.
MOST FIRST-HALF POINTS SINCE 2010 SEASON-OPENER
FSU’s 34 first-half points were the most scored since opening day 2010 against Samford (42).

THIRD TRY’S A CHARM
Junior quarterback EJ Manuel found junior wide receiver Rodney Smith for a 45-yard touchdown on the third play of the game just one minute and 20 seconds into the contest. It was Smith’s first touchdown of 2011 and fourth of his career.
LAST TIME THE SEMINOLES SCORED ON FIRST DRIVE
The last time FSU scored on the first drive of a game was in the 2010 ACC Championship Game on Dec. 4, 2010, when Dustin Hopkins made a field goal.
REED CAN RUN
Reed had a 35-yard run at the 9:49 mark in the first quarter. He has at least one 30-yard rush in all four seasons of his career. His career-long run of 42 yards came in both 2010 and 2009.
For his career, he has 34 rushes for 243 yards for his career, an impressive 7.15 average.
McCRAY LOGS FIRST ACTION SINCE 2009
In the first quarter, Moses McCray made his first appearance since Jan. 1, 2010 when FSU defeated West Virginia, 33-21, in the Gator Bowl.
POWELL HOLDING OPPONENTS DEEP
Of Powell’s five punts this season, three have been downed inside the 20. His punt of 45 yards in the second quarter is the longest of the year and pinned the Buccaneers at the two yard line.
MOST POINTS IN THE FIRST QUARTER SINCE 2009
FSU scored its most points in the first quarter since Nov. 7, 2009, when it dropped 17 on Clemson in a 40-24 loss at Clemson.
MANUEL TIES CAREER-BEST IN FIRST SEVEN MINUTES
Manuel’s second touchdown pass of the game, to Reed at 8:11 in the first quarter, tied his career-best set last week against Louisiana-Monroe.
MANUEL COMPLETES FIRST EIGHT PASSES
Manuel completed his first eight passes. His first incompletion came at the 2:37 mark in the first quarter.
THOMPSON HITS 1,000-YARD MARK FOR CAREER RUSHING
On Thompson’s first carry in the first quarter, on the Seminoles’ second drive; he rushed for three yards to eclipse the 1,000-yard rushing mark for his career.

A moment of silence was held with a presentation of colors by the Joint Air Force/Tallahassee Fire Dept. Honor Guard in addition an 11-foot steel beam from the World Trade Center was on site at Langford Green. The FSU band also had a special halftime tribute.
