TALLAHASSEE, Fla. –The Florida State men’s tennis team continued play today in the Southern Intercollegiate and Bedford Cup tournaments.
At the Southern Intercollegiate tournament in Athens, Ga., players dealt with weather delays that pushed the final matches of the night past 10 p.m. The Florida State doubles team of Cristian Gonzalez Mendez and Marco Nunez teamed up to defeat the No. 2 seed Paul Oosterbaan and Ben Wagland of host Georgia, 8-4. The win over the No. 26 team in the country faulted the Seminoles into the quarterfinals of the Division I doubles competition and will next face Cole Fiegel and Michael Kay of Georgia Tech Sunday afternoon.
“I was really pleased with our doubles showing today,” said head coach Dwayne Hultquist. “We advanced one team to the quarterfinals [at Southern Intercollegiate] and two teams to the semifinals [at the Bedford Cup].”
Gonzalez Mendez, the No. 13 seed in Division I singles, defeated Luis Valero of Tennessee, 6-4, 6-2, before falling to No. 7 seed Nick Wood of Georgia, 6-3, 6-3. Wood is the No. 89 player in the country entering the 2014 season.
Also playing in Division I, Nunez defeated No. 9 seed and No. 90 ranked Rhys Johnson of Vanderbilt, 6-4, 3-6, 7-5. Nunez fell to Pablo Gor of Armstrong State 3-6, 7-5, 6-0 in his second match of the day, a match that ended around 10:30 p.m.
“The weather delays were tough today, because we ended up playing tennis off-and-on for 14 hours,” said Hultquist. “It made for a long day, and Marco playing the final match of the night was difficult. But I was really pleased with him today, beating a Top 100-ranked player in Rhys Johnson is a big deal for him and for our team.”
In Division II singles, No. 5 seed Hampton Drake of Clemson beat Jose Gracia 6-4, 6-4, while Parker Evertsen trails Vanderbilt’s Tate Allwardt 3-0 in a match suspended by rain in Division III consolation. The match is set to resume Sunday morning at 9 a.m.
