MIAMI, Fla. – Florida State concluded its fall season at the Miami Invitational earlier today with two Seminoles finishing the singles’ tournament with a perfect record, 3-0. The Seminoles faced instate rivalry from two other schools: University of Central Florida and Florida International.
“All in all, the girls accomplished their team goals for this weekend in winning two flight championships, so that is something to be said, when any team accomplishes their goals they are getting better each and every competition and that is why they play,” said assistant coach Oliver Foreman.
As one of the Seminoles who finished the invitational with a perfect singles’ record, No. 113 Federica Suess (Ludwigshafen, Germany) defeated Elvira Serrot of Central Florida, 6-3, 7-6 in her last match of the fall season. Junior Jessica Sucupira (Wente) (Whitehouse, Tex.) was the other Seminole to finish with a 3-0 singles’ record by outscoring Central Florida’s Alexis Rodriguez, 5-7, 6-0, 6-1, in her last match of the weekend.
In spite of having a thriving weekend in Miami, Fla., both junior Lauren Macfarlane (Ogden, Utah) and sophomore Bonny Davidson (Johannesburg, South Africa) lost both their singles’ matches. Andrea Yacaman of Central Florida defeated Macfarlane, 6-4, 6-3 while Christy Core, also from Central Florida, beat Davidson, 6-4, 6-4.
“We have prided ourselves on being a 3rd day team, which is basically considered the final day of any competition, and I don’t believe the girls fulfilled that today,” said Foreman. “There were some fine individual accomplishments with a couple of the girls going undefeated, but as a team we did not compete near as hard as we are capable off. All credit goes to UCF not giving into what I believe to be a stronger team.”
The doubles matches were once again unsuccessful for Florida State. Macfarlane and Suess fell to Bianca Eichkorn and Laura Vallverdu of Miami, 8-1. Sucupira and Davidson were overpowered by Miami’s Gabriela Mejia and Michaela Kissell, 1-0, ret.
“I’m ecstatic about Gobbles’ tennis, the first two days she showed me that she can play some world class tennis. Fede and Jess continuing their winning streaks almost form the backbone of this team, and with Bonnie was a completely different player to what I have seen from her since coming into Florida State, she has a world of potential, and this weekend she tapped on some of it.”
